"Oprah Winfrey recently advised her listeners to the notion that it is fine to tip10% or less to restaurant servers due to the current economic crisis."

LINK

So basically she's saying that in this poor economy where many can BARELY survive and pay their bills, it should be made EVEN WORSE for those in the service industry by having their income cut nearly in half because she apparently thinks that dining out is a necessity and not a privledge. How small of her to even think or suggest such a thing ESPECIALLY with the way the economy is right now.

ive never liked her much. the thing is... women dont tip much anyway. so servers are probably only losing out on 5% based on oprah giving this advice anyway. men dont watch oprah. they are how servers make their money anyway.

If you can afford to go out and eat at a restaurant "in the current economic crisis" where you'll be waited on, you can afford 18%+ tip (barring an awful waiter/waitress).

I have worked for tips so I tip well...but someone please explain to me why restaurants can't pay their staff like everyone else and just charge me more on the bill...then the servers could pay taxes like everyone else and get us out of Obama's debt...

Here's what I don't get. Growing up I always heard 10% - 15% was the rule of thumb, then within the last 10 years or so it seemed to jump 5% out of nowhere. Was I raised wrong, or did the service industry pull a fast one since any cost of living increases would theoretically be handled by rising meal prices and any merit raises would be handled by providing superior service and getting a bigger tip (or graduating to a better restaurant).

So would you rather a lot of customers tipping at 10% or a handful of customers tipping at 18%? Seems to be a win win situation if more people dined and tipped 10% to me..

The bottom line is if the marginal cost of the addition 5-10% makes a difference, you shouldnt be eating out to begin with. She is basically saying go 50 in the school zone as opposed to 55.

I think it's ok to tip 10%, or 0%, depending upon nothing but your wishes. Why the hell do we have to pay for food, which we've already paid for, to be brought to our table. Isn't that the responsibility of the restaurant? Why are we supposed to pay his staff?

Nice to see racism now creeping into the Food board.
