What can be done about windshield costs and durability?

The costs of replacement are outrageous. Safelite quoted me $1002.00. 2 others quoted me >$700 before tax. If that is what a windshield costs, they need to make them more durable.
My wife and I have each had to have our windshields replaced in the past 18 months, and I had to also had an additional one 2.5 years ago. The previous 2 we used insurance to pay ($50 copay), but we just switched to a new insurance with a teen driver a week ago. The new insurance (Progressive) actually mentioned the windshield replacements in the claims history.
I was driving 75 on the interstate and a rock hit my windshield. By the time I got to work, I had more than a foot long break. Windshields are not durable. And they are too expensive to replace.
I cant be alone here, right?

Replace yours with something stronger. Some sort of metal, good luck.

Just quit buying windshields. When the demand goes down, so will the price.

Stop following too close to dump trucks and 18 wheelers.

Just get the cheapest windshield not the one with fancy sensors and logos or whatever in it. You'll end up having to replace it anyway

Dash cam, call the number on the back of the truck and tell them to pay up or see you in court.

You are correct
Check out other cars when in a parking lot or something, seems like over half of them have cracks
And no, it's not a trashy area
I just put the epoxy stuff from Amazon on them and it makes them less noticeable

Yep.
Also in Louisiana once they drop the inspection sticker scam don’t worry about it.

Good pair of driving goggles is about $85.

Bring a few $20s to the brake tag station so the lady there will overlook the crack.

You’ll be pissed to know that despite paying more than anyone for car insurance in this state, Florida (who also doesn’t have inspection stickers) will replace your windshield for free.

Safelite prices are higher than giraffe tail.
Check with the hood place next time. Bengal Glass used to be practically half the price of Safelite. Are they still on Government by the tracks?

lol! I don’t fix that shite. I rolled with a cracked windshield for over 10 years

Stop buying new cars that need to have sensor and cameras calibrated. One of my grandmas has a suburu that cost 1200-1500 to replace hers. Majority of the cost was the actual installation cost.

Mine was $1,395 last month. Outrageous.

My recent windshields are typically 40-50% of that. It’s a local shop near my house. I drop it and leave it and come back in a couple of hours. With safelite you are paying for convenience and they know it. I’m a middle class guy. If you are rich and your time is money use Safelite.

I had a Toyota Highlander sunroof windshield absolutely shatter spontaneously while driving about 75 on the interstate. When I went to have it replaced the glass guy tells me all of the glass is so thin now that my condition was far from uncommon!
They do it because it weighs less and costs less. He said these days about 2% of front windshields shatter during replacing.

I need one right now, too. One of the local places broke it down for me
Windshield: $425.50
Calibrating: $220
Adhesive: $28
Roughly 1/3 of the cost is making sure the cameras/sensors work. Can I skip that step since I don’t think I used those cameras/sensors?
