Love it. This is why I live in this great state.
NO FREE HANDOUTS!
NO FREE HANDOUTS!

Battle of words. If you get a benefit and pay for it with labor it isn't unpaid. SJWs love to twist things up.

Louisiana is basically a welfare state with a ton of handouts. Maybe they’ll finally get things under control though.

It would force homeless people to choose between jail and involuntary treatment, make them pay for it, and if they can't pay, force them to perform unpaid labor.
Someone I've talked to finally decided to author a bill about it.
Been saying this since before the turn of the century. Time to exercise 'tough love'.

They are also free to migrate to a sanctuary city

wut?
ETA. I’m not in favor of handouts at all. Maybe that’s what the downvotes are about. But this state is absolutely rotten with handout dependent people. Knowing I’m paying for half the people in this state to get free shite is why I want my kids to leave here when they can.

A local, very socialist church has basically ruined a large shopping area here. They’re well-meaning when they offer their church as a shelter during extreme heat or cold and run a food bank, but what it’s led to is the entire homeless population of Lake Charles swarming that shopping center and hurting businesses.
A lot of them are addicts, too. I’ve had a few run-ins with them, even though I try to avoid the area. Unfortunately, Lowe’s and Home Depot are unavoidable for me as a contractor, but honestly, every business there should be pissed at the church for creating what feels like a drug addict sanctuary.
If anything, the church’s well-intentioned actions just prove that this kind of law could actually be beneficial to society as a whole.

If anyone is going to make homelessness a criminal offense then I guess it has to be us.
Posted on 4/20/26 at 10:04 am to stout
What is this "treatment" that they speak of?
The link didn't mention addiction. It only mentioned homeless arrested for a crime being forced to choose between jail or a year forced treatment???
Treatment for what? drugs? shoplifting? medical conditions???
Also the link mentions the bill would make it illegal to sleep outside? So if you fall asleep on the beach you are a criminal? You go camping and sleep under the stars you are a criminal?
Need more details.

You are welcome to open a recovery center
I know a guy who did, and he makes a lot of money renting beds out at $135 per week
You could help while making money or just sit here and bitch while letting innocent people feel the brunt of dealing with homeless addicts

Oh the horrors of forcing treatment on a drug addict that would never go to treatment on their own! The absolute horror! That may be the only real chance to get them to get their life back and as usual, leftists want to do nothing and act like that is more humane than forcing them to actively try something new.

So you are saying an article against the bill is very vague about the actual bill?
You can google the bill you know?
It's House Bill 211
quote:ail.
Louisiana House Bill 211 (2026) – Summary
Creates a specialized “Homelessness Court” system, similar to drug or mental health courts.
Individuals cited for certain offenses (like camping in public or nuisance-related violations) can be routed into this court instead of traditional prosecution.
Judges can require participation in services such as substance abuse treatment, mental health programs, or housing assistance.
Ongoing court supervision is part of the process, with required check-ins and compliance monitoring.
Failure to comply with court-ordered conditions can result in penalties, including fines, warrants, or jail time.
The bill also pushes local governments toward stricter enforcement of public camping and related ordinances, rather than allowing informal encampments.
Key point: The bill combines enforcement with mandated services—using the court system to require treatment and oversight instead of relying solely on citations or j

In the Communism, bums and addicts are classified as social parasites and sent to forced labor camps and "re-education" centers.

I would much rather see money spent on real mental help and disease treatment than simply sending it to the city or county jails for incarceration. How does incarceration help someone who has a mental or diseased condition?
Posted on 4/20/26 at 10:13 am to stout
Subsidize homelessness, get more homeless. Stop enabling these people. Why do we accept this behavior?

Many of the homeless are drug addicts, but many want that lifestyle, the ones who cannot function in a responsible lifestyle. They want to function with little to no requirements, this is freedom to them, they have little to no hope.
