Im in my mid-40s.. there were many times earlier in my life when i *thought* i had food poisoning .. didnt feel well, going to the toilet a lot, chalked it up to food poisoning, seemed reasonable.. until the first time i got *real* food poisoning.. multiple projectile everything from every orifice.. could not be away from a bathroom for more than 5 minutes, for about half a day.. . Literal hell on earth for that period of time.. it’s happened 3 times to me now, all in my 40s.. not sure if its a function of getting older or what .. happened twice at home in the US, once abroad in Southeast Asia- ironically after eating a hamburger …. Thing is though, it’s usually hard to pinpoint the culprit since , if you look it up- apparently food poisoning can hit anywhere from 6 hours until 24 hours later.. from what i could figure out though, the other two times i got it- once was from a frozen bowl of teriyaki chicken at Whole Foods, the other time was from a #2 meal combo at Chick Fil A… appropriately named #2 combo, as it turned out .

Spent 3 days in the hospital from a serious bout of it when I was in college. Horrible.

How do you guys determine if you have food poisoning or a stomach flu?

Most people that say they have food poisoning just had an upset stomach or maybe it just didn’t agree with them. A real case of food poisoning is like was said above. Projectile vomiting and violent diarrhea at the same time and severe pain in in your stomach.

I had this once. Affectionately it was after eating a traditional Filipino rice and shrimp dish at a friends house. From 1-7 am I threw up no less than 20 times.

I was very weak. First in line at urgent care that Sunday morning. After some medicine and three bags of fluid later they called it dysentery .

I have had it. I wouldn't wish it on anyone. Well, except maybe one or 2 people in my lifetime.

Happened to me twice. 2007 Peter Pan peanut butter salmonella outbreak and once a local steakhouse with some bad corn.

Wish you the best, keep hydrated with water.

Lukewarm broth too, for the sodium

All that stuff coming out takes minerals and salts out of you as well

For you that went through it did chewing on ice help?

Most people have no idea how food poisoning works and incorrectly blame it on the last meal they ate before they got sick.
Fact that it takes the bug almost 12 hours to overwhelm your body's defense mechanisms.

So you blame it in the shrimp dip you ate 2 hours earlier, when the fact is it has to be those eggs you had for breakfast

As far as i can tell, the only thing that helps is time… the food poisoning is your body desperately trying to rid itself of whatever you ate that was poisonous and infected your system.. so it’s going to evacuate it however it can.. i dont see how chewing ice would help make that process more comfortable, though i didnt try it.. my advice is let it work through you and out, for as long as it takes .. you’ll be miserable, no matter what you try.. i was just thankful when the vomiting stopped .. then sleep, drink gatorade, then sleep some more.. last time i got it i was 2 days away from boarding a 15 hour flight .. cant imagine a worse scenario than being trapped in a tiny airplane bathroom for that long .. luckily i got over it just in time.. also i wouldn’t attempt to eat anything for about 48 hours, then ease back in with crackers, bananas , the usual.. you will lose significant weight, whether you need to or not .

Bless you brother. I’ve had it twice, both times I’ll never forget.

First time Mrs Cotten and I got it a day after coming home from our honeymoon, I legitimately just assumed they’d find our bodies on the bathroom floor. I thought I’d die in that bathroom.

Second time was about a two years ago from tallow that had gone bad. I was so sick I couldn’t even leave the bathroom to plug in my phone hours after it had died. We had two under three at the time, which made it 1000x worse.

In the 1980’s, the plant I worked at in Geismar always served us a big Christmas jambalaya lunch on 12/23 and then let the staff go home early. Ate a big plate, then went out to dinner and threw back a few beers and a couple dozen raw. Starting about midnight, I spent the rest of the night on the toilet while holding a trash can with pressurized releases continuously flowing out both ends. I thought the oysters were bad.

Called a buddy in the lab the next day, and he told me they might have to shut the plant down. Had to call out the plant nurse, and had hundreds of people stricken. Someone had saved a plate in the refrigerator in one of the control rooms, the company tested it, and sure enough, the pork was bad.

I called my doctor and he phoned in a prescription that was like a cork had been put in my arse. Within a couple of days, I felt like a balloon, so I quit taking it, and resumed my liquid discharge. We were going skiing in New Mexico, and I’m not sure I passed a single rest stop on the way without ruining it.

Anyone wondering if it’s like the flu or a stomach virus, I can assure you, it’s many times worse.

OP, drink a lot of water and Pedialyte and :prayerssent:

I think the idea was the ice allows slower intake of water so may not throw it up as say trying to drink an 8 ounce glass of water in shorter time.

When I was a kid, I'd guess around 10, my brother, 5 years my senior, was suffering from food poisoning. It was the first time I remember looking at someone and thinking "they'd be better off dead".

Feel you. That one time could not stand in shower because so weak from food poison, threw up out of both ends for hours, and sledgehammer headache. Hang in there! That time was my fault. Ate something that was questionable. If in doubt, throw it out!

There were many times I probably had mild versions. That one time will change a person.

Had food poisoning from eating a hamburger at Audubon Zoo.

Stayed on a couch for 3 days/nights. Probably should have gone to the ER.
