Trump pulls millions from funding of Catholic Charities after war of words with Pope Leo

Funding cuts for the charity come as Trump has repeatedly attacked the pope in recent days, calling him “weak on crime” and criticizing his stance on foreign policy, particularly his opposition to the war.
On Tuesday, Trump asked that the pontiff be reminded of the thousands of innocent protesters killed by the Iranian regime after nationwide protests there in January.
Following Trump’s comments, Leo delivered a speech in Cameroon and warned that the world is being ravaged by "tyrants." He has emphasized peace and warned against justifying violence through religion, signaling a clear disagreement with U.S. policy.
A few days prior, War Secretary Pete Hegseth, who has often referenced religion in his public speeches, asked Americans to pray for the success of the U.S operation in Iran “in the name of Jesus Christ.”

Why were federal dollars being used to fund charities?

Be careful because he might close all your hospitals.

Good
Now do it for all religious groups receiving any funding. Charity or not

Good. Some of the worst offenders out there for helping illegals.

I hope this isn't the first time you've thought to ask this question.

No. It was rhetorical and aimed right at Eurotrashs narrow little mind

Good.
Why are we giving public funds to any religious organization.

The pope is more interested in Islam and global politics than he is with Christian lives, and as the proclaimed physical representative of Jesus Christ on earth, that should very obviously be more than just a bit troubling for anyone who does actually believe the gospel.
Being interfaith, altering scripture, championing Islam, and not concerning yourself with the massive amounts of Christian lives lost at the hands of Islam I suppose is not concerning to someone who is more politically focused than Christian focused.

Because that was the Reagan, Bush 1 and Bush 2 shift from Social programs... "Let us give the money to the Churches and they'll be more efficient in helping people.”

So before this public back-and-forth with Trump and the Pope tgere were reports of axlerod going to the vatican. Seems odd. What is going on?

I've been a pretty outspoken Catholic on this board and I cut my funding to Catholic Charities three years ago

Like it or not, "The Pope" is a political position.
Posted on 4/16/26 at 11:59 am to Eurocat
That was the correct thing to do regardless of Pope Leo's words.

Weird you mentioned reagan and bush 1 when the real change came with clinton and W.

Why are the taxpayers forced to pay these charities in the first place?
We are being fricking robbed blind

Funny you missed that this happened last month, and it is due to the fact that the program for unaccompanied minors has dramatically fewer enrollees now since the border is closed and those in the system were transferred out.
What is more telling is that the charity was upset that the program was closed instead of just radically reduced, as it will be difficult to rebuild it at a later time. Why should we be concerned about the difficulty of rebuilding a system to house and school unaccompanied minors at scale unless the implication is that the church expects the open border chaos and mass illegal immigration to come back?
This sounds so much like the same whining we heard when they shut the border crossings down about them closing shelters for women and children, illegal immigrants in El Paso, and finding out it was because no one was using them.
Sorry, you are losing funding, but if there is no need, then there should be no handout.
