I was curious on the price tag so i googled

Cost of opening a new Kroger is around 38 million

Cost of opening a smaller grocery chain that’s more for low income areas like a Piggly Wiggly is 1.5-5 million

Yep. Opened just long enough to buy votes, then close down after re-election after it becomes a wasteland crime magnet.

New Yorkers are fricking idiots.

Let's lower grocery prices in 5 stores, total, by using $200 million of tax payer money.

Unbelievable.

I for one, love this guy.

He epitomizes the naivete of the low IQ leftist that can't comprehend the most basic elements of a functional society.

He takes 2+ years and 30 mil of taxpayer money to open a grocery that would cost a tenth of that in a fourth of the time in the private sector and holds press conferences to act like he's won something.

The clapping seals lining up behind him are the icing on the cake.

"What time of the day in 10 years?" he asks the Soviet clerk.

"What are you care??? It's in 10 years from now?!" the surprised clerk asked.

"Because the plumber scheduled to come on that day", the man answered.

Too soon. Why not make sure it’s perfect? $65 million opening in 2031 would be better. Need to make sure there are enough “studies” are done by his friends and donors.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani that the first city-owned grocery store – which carries a whopping $30 million expected price tag – won’t open until 2029.

Meanwhile Target is building a 150,000 sq ft retail store here, complete with the city building new access roads and installing traffic devices, that will open about a year and a half after it was announced. In what was previously a soybean field.

And this moron cannot open a grocery store in an existing location for three years.

The USSR had state owned supermarkets. Neal Boortz told the story of a Russian journalist and his wife who got permisstion to visit just before the fall of the govt.
They went to a typical large store like Krogers and their eyes just widened. The wife said "Oh, this must be the store for government officials." Boortz replied: 'No, this is for everyone.' They were shocked that something like this existed.

They’ll fake it until they make it, claim awesome commie savings for the comrades and then….

Blame capitalism for everything that goes wrong.

I can't believe the Democrats can't find a way to have one of these grocery stores open up and have it appear to be successful, all the while some clandestine NGO will fund its existence., just to show how well this works.

Imagine what that $30 million is going to turn into in 3 years. I bet he comes back saying he needs $100 million by then.

NYC bodega owners are thrilled because they can re-sell more government food at $0 cost basis.

If the government is spending $30M to open this “non-profit” grocery, isn’t that really highlighting the idiocy of this proposal?

It would take an average grocery store about $1.8B in revenue to hit $30M in pure profit.

And the city is “helping” the city grocery store by not charging for property tax. Couldn’t they have just done that with existing grocery stores and achieved far better outcomes?
