Anyone have good experiences putting a gun safe in an uninsulated garage in south Louisiana? Don’t have enough room inside the house but concerned about the humidity and no hvac in the garage causing havoc on the firearms. I know dehumidifiers, gold rod, silica packs would be required.

I would recommend putting the guns in silicone treated gun socks also. Not only for the rust protection but also to protect from banging around with the other guns when taking them in and out.

I had a safe in a metal shed years ago with a window a/c that went out. I couldn't get to the safe for about six months due to working overseas.

There were a few guns with some rust on them, but, of course, the shed gets hot as Hades in the summer.

I just converted a horse stall to an insulated storage room and got a plug-in dehumidifier for the safe.

I would not recommend doing this. The humidity is way too high and you will see rust in a short amount of time.

Golden rod in mine and all guns are rust free.
YMMV

I had a safe in my garage for years with two dehumidifiers, never had a problem with rust, sweating etc.

I put an 84 gun safe in my garage. Loaded it up with the silicone pellet dehumidifiers. I have not had any issues. I bolted it in the floor and put an air tag and a GPS on it..
I am told you have more issues with the cold weather than hot weather. I just keep them oiled and wiped down. No issues.

Humidity aside, that seems like an open invitation for easy theft, even if bolted down. Too visible and too accessible.

Have seen people "camouflage" the safe with a cover or a shelf in the way so you can't see it from outside.

Someone grabbing the thing in five minutes with a dolly is definitely a consideration.

Mine is in the garage in Houston. Garage is not conditioned, but it's surrounded by conditioned living space on all sides and really doesn't ever get all that hot. Never had a rust issue. I have the dehumidifying bags in there, but admit I'm not very good at keeping up with them. I also have a work area that can't be seen from the street where the safe sits and it's nestled into an area with built in cabinets surrounding and bolted down. But probably wouldn't be all that worried even if it wasn't bolted down. Just as safe there as in the house.

My FIL has his safe in his garage in NOLA and he’s got some very expensive guns in there. Not what I would do but he keeps them well oiled and uses a golden rod and hasn’t had any issues.

I agree. I had no other place to put mine. So secured with bolts, cameras, GPS and air tags. I also have neighbors on all sides that are always home. My neighborhood has cameras on every street.
One thing I did was include a 30k rider on my homeowners insurance for it but that would not cover all in that garage safe. I have two more in the house as well. The garage safe is for what I am working on and shoot every weekend.
I debated a long time about putting one in the garage just because of theft issue. I had no other place to put one. Wife said not in the kitchen.

Mine was in the garage for at least 10 years. Kept a heat stick in it running 24/7. Oiled the guns once a year, never really had any problems to speak about.

check out Eastern Insurance historic firearms and collectibles policy, It is a stand alone policy not connected to homeowners, covers $40K worth of guns and accessories, $100 deductible, DO NOT have to list your forearms unless any one gun is valued over $10K

only costs 150/year

I’ve had one for 3 years. 20+ guns in it. Using a golden rod and monitor humidity. No issues.

I would never do it but I have a buddy that has 2 cannon safes in his metal building. It is insulated but not AC controlled. He has golden rod in each one. Keeps his gun lubed up with Ballistol.
