The canal's current size restrictions means smaller vessels, with capacities of approximately 400,000-550,000 barrels of light sweet crude oil, are the only ships that can safely pass through the canal. These ships are referred to as Panamax tankers, and their smaller cargos lead to a higher per-barrel cost.

I was never on board with exporting US crude oil. We should be using up foreign oil while sitting on ours (or at least limiting to US consumption). I'd rather be the last nation with significant domestic reserves than one of the first to run out. I'm fine with US refineries being tooled to consume Canadian and Venezuelan crude, but ramping up crude exports seems like a long term mistake. Having abundant, cheap energy when rivals have scarce, expensive energy is a giant strategic advantage.

Turmoil in the ME is bad economically in the short term for the US but would potentially be a massive boon economically and geo strategically even if I’m not advocating for causing that intentionally.

There are oil and gas reserves in the Gulf of America that are simply untapped. Nothing in US region is running out anytime soon.
