Very cool seeing the wave of empty tankers heading to the US to pick up some desperately needed crude for Hormuz-starved markets. All the tankers on the map below are empty VLCCs (~2 million barrel capacity each) currently heading for the US Gulf Coast.

Can they not go through the canal? Seems like a shorter route for some of those boats.

Maybe it’s time to start dealing with the gays of Harmuz.

The canal's current size restrictions means smaller vessels, with capacities of approximately 400,000-550,000 barrels of light sweet crude oil, are the only ships that can safely pass through the canal. These ships are referred to as Panamax tankers, and their smaller cargos lead to a higher per-barrel cost.

It's roughly 24k km going the Atlantic route and 30k km going the Pacific route using the canal.

ETA: That's measuring from Kuwait

I’ve been through the canal on a destroyer, the canal is narrow and not very deep

I was never on board with exporting US crude oil. We should be using up foreign oil while sitting on ours (or at least limiting to US consumption). I'd rather be the last nation with significant domestic reserves than one of the first to run out. I'm fine with US refineries being tooled to consume Canadian and Venezuelan crude, but ramping up crude exports seems like a long term mistake. Having abundant, cheap energy when rivals have scarce, expensive energy is a giant strategic advantage.

Turmoil in the ME is bad economically in the short term for the US but would potentially be a massive boon economically and geo strategically even if I’m not advocating for causing that intentionally.

So, they take our oil to keep our prices high. I'm still screaming daily about diesel prices.

What a scam.

There looks to be a bunch east of Kuwait, the ones by India for example.

I figured it was a size limitation thing but didn’t know and I try not to make assumptions. I’d rather ask and learn something.

Thanks to the couple people who downvoted a simple question.

Peak oil refers to the point when global petroleum production reaches its maximum rate, after which production will decline. This concept is closely related to the finite nature of oil reserves and the economic viability of extraction methods.

quote:

The Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion occurred on April 20, 2010, resulting in the deaths of 11 workers and leading to the largest marine oil spill in history, with approximately 134 million gallons of oil released into the Gulf of Mexico. The explosion was caused by a blowout at the Macondo well, operated by BP.

There are oil and gas reserves in the Gulf of America that are simply untapped. Nothing in US region is running out anytime soon.

It’s all theater.

It's a shame that Russia chose to blow up their own pipeline.

Yes, true.

Plus, let’s be honest … we can use the extra cash. Our debt will soon reach $40 trillion … it’s unfathomable how a treasury comes back from such governmental abuse.

My how things change …..
