God does not bless any conflict. Anyone who is a disciple of Christ, the Prince of Peace, is never on the side of those who once wielded the sword and today drop bombs. Military action will not create space for freedom or times of #Peace, which comes only from the patient promotion of coexistence and dialogue among peoples.

I do wonder what Augustine and Aquinas would adjust in regards to Just War Theory with the technological advances in weaponry.

Been thinking about this a lot lately. I think their ideas would shift dramatically and they would see the conflict in Iran as a just war because while it isn’t considered defensive in the conventional sense, it absolutely is when you look at modern warfare and technology.

Uhhh
quote:

Deuteronomy 7:2
And when the Lord your God gives them over to you, and you defeat them, then you must devote them to complete destruction. You shall make no covenant with them and show no mercy to them.

quote:

Deuteronomy 20:16-17
But in the cities of these peoples that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance, you shall save alive nothing that breathes, but you shall devote them to complete destruction, the Hittites and the Amorites, the Canaanites and the Perizzites, the Hivites and the Jebusites, as the Lord your God has commanded,

There are several conflicts in the bible where God blessed a certain side. God even prompted the conflict and aided in the victories. This Pope must not read the bible I guess.

These aren't ideas he actually believes, they're political statements. He knows force isn't always bad, which is why he has armed guards.

I agree. We’ve had bad popes before, and we will have more in the future. Christ’s Church will prevail.

This is quite possibly one of the dumbest lines of logic I've seen and that's saying something. Arguing, in essence, that force is by nature a bad thing and there is never a moral justification for it in an objective sense is bananas. Does that mean, Mr. Pope, that human beings do not have a right to defend themselves nor to do anything to prevent evil? Does the calling of good men to defend the weak and oppressed stop at the evildoer simply articulating that they don't want to stop whatever behavior they're carrying out? Awful logic from Leo.

If you think this is our first retarded pope, you know nothing of church history. Which is probably why you are protestant.

Yep, this pope would do well to focus on God’s word and not politics. His credibility has really been damaged by his last few statements on conflict and war, imo.

I understand what he's saying here, however, God also gave us free will, and we all have a right to live.

For example, Obama gave the Iranians $1.7B in 2016 which aided in accelerating Iran's nuclear weapons program. Obama did not drop bombs on Iran. And let's say, for argument's sake, Trump never acted in Iran. Not last year, not this year. Now let's fast forward 5-10 years and no one has intervened with Iran, and now they have nuclear weapons. A nation that openly sponsors terrorists and funds them, is now protected by those nukes. And now, lets say they drop one on Israel.

What is Pope Leo's response? It is probably the same. But with millions dead before the tweet. So, should America act to protect millions of lives at the cost of a few bad actors, or should America react after millions are already dead? If we react, at least Pope Leo won't post a tweet aimed at America, absolved of any nuance. Sure, millions will be dead, but at least we didn't get tweeted at, right?

The bible is full of military action sanctioned by God.

Then again, the Pope cares very little for the Bible.

So hypothetically the Allies should have just let the concentration camps of WW2 continue? Because heaven forbid we use guns or bombs to stop it. Guess we shoulda just asked nicely and kept asking nicely?

My pope is a pacifist weakling. It is what it is. He ain't speaking from the chair here, so we Catholics don't need to agree with him.
