CBS is doing some really good work here. This a-hole needs to be in jail. Here are some excerpts:

A CBS News Investigation found one Los Angeles County hospice physician's name, Dr. Rajiv Bhuva, on Medicare claims for nearly 2,800 patients across 126 California hospices in 2024, according to the last full year of available data.

The search for Dr. Bhuva

Bhuva, 55, earned his medical degree from St. Georges University in Grenada and completed his residency at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, according to his WebMD profile.

In records reviewed by CBS News, Bhuva's name is listed as certifying terminally ill patients across scores of hospice facilities in 2024, generating a total of $71.7 million in Medicare reimbursements — among the highest in California.

The only California hospice physician with a higher Medicare reimbursement total in recent years was Dr. Domingo Barrientos, who was convicted of conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud in 2024 and is currently serving a federal prison sentence.

According to Medicare data, the average California hospice physician cares for roughly 140 patients annually. In 2024, Bhuva certified 2,791 patients as terminally ill — approximately 20 times the state average.

Terminal patients who don't die

The role of a certifying physician in hospice requires face-to-face evaluations, regular plan-of-care reviews, and recertifications of terminal illness — work that usually requires significant time with each patient, Newport, who has been practicing in the field for 18 years, said.

Typically, hospice care requires hands-on attention by a care team, often delivered at a patient's home or bedside.

There are a range of explanations for why one physician might be identified in connection with the care of so many patients, according to hospice patient advocate Sheila Clark. They could be lending their medical license and credentials to companies that are billing Medicare for substandard care. Or, Clark said, the hospice may be billing taxpayers for care that is never provided — using false or stolen identities to submit for reimbursement. California officials have acknowledged that as a problem in the state's hospice industry.

One key role for physicians in submitting billing requests to Medicare is to provide certification that the patient is indeed suffering from a terminal illness. But California auditors reported in 2022 that, at times, that certification may be little more than a rubber stamp. They wrote that there are few legitimate explanations for a physician's name to appear on thousands of claims.

State auditors have reported that a high survival rate among a hospice provider's patients can be a key indicator for fraud because most people seeking palliative care are expected to be in the final stages of a terminal illness.

Of Bhuva's 2,791 patients, according to state and federal records reviewed by CBS News, fewer than 2% died in 2024.

The fact LA County hospices had 98% recovery rate should have been a clue.

Arrest him and everyone who benefitted from this, have them make a rowboat in prison, tow them 100 miles out towards India, and tell them good luck.

Almost any illness CAN be terminal. The more practical rule of thumb is that of having a life expectancy of 6 months or less. Sometimes true hospice patients live longer than six months, but one fraudulent hospice in CA had a 97% survival rate year after year, and this one did too. There is HUGE fraud in this area.

Yes sir. Bari Weiss if I remember correctly. They're doing a better job covering America rather than just running cover for the dems and hatchet jobs on the republicans. It's refreshing to see and read.

ANd I bet you very little happens to this criminal....thats the problem!

Criminal walk every day! Especially the white collar, big dollar, thieves....

Treat yourself to the Stephen A Cohen story one day (youtube Frontline show)....it will nauseate you.

Insider trading scam netted him 9 billions dollars, he got caught, and the SEC/FBI fined him 1.8 billion....so he walks with 7.2 billion, and ZERO jailtime....oh, BTW, he is now majority owner of the NY METS!!!!!!!!

I’m curious how the money flowed and what others are part of the scam.

Surely lots of workers in these facilities noticed no one was dying.

Many absurdities in this story, but there's clearly a systemic failure.

Why is a single dr allowed to bill for $71.7 million? Why weren't transactions flagged as the number invoiced crept up and up beyond typical billing levels for similar service providers? Especially since the story mentioned they just convicted another guy a year before.

This is the kind of shite that opens peoples' eyes to the level of retardation engineered into government. I swear, the govt can eff up anything except wasting money. They always manage to find a way to do that.

How on earth anyone can have an ounce of faith in such flawed institutions is beyond me.

Defund. Defund. Defund.

Aw hell, it's in Cali. So we can rest assured that somehow the rest of us will be fleeced into bailing them out when they run out of funds. Yay.

n 2024, Bhuva certified 2,791 patients as terminally ill

If he never took a day off in 2024, literally worked 365 days; thats almost 8 patients a DAY certifying as terminally ill

Assume working 5 days a week and never taking any time off (other than typical weekend or 2 days a week), thats almost 11 PER DAY

This is just how it works in India. Scamming, cheating, and deception is like drinking water and breathing air for them.
