NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Mayor Helena Moreno said Monday (March 30) the Department of Public Works (DPW) is making pothole repairs a priority.

In a Facebook video, Moreno said Deputy Chief Administrative Officer Steve Nelson is aiming to fill 1,500 potholes a week.

Nelson explained the DPW will hand-off its responsibilities for moving barriers to other departments, freeing up manpower to address the paving. The new effort began Monday.

“We need to get to a place where somebody makes a 311 request and it’s 30 days or less from the time they make the request to when that request gets addressed effectively,” he said.

New Orleans 311 data shows that since Jan. 1, 2022 the city has accumulated 2,720 pending pot hole repair requests.

The average number of days those requests remain open is 727.

Moreno’s administration is also planning on hiring 50 new DPW workers to assist in the pothole repair push.

Nelson said the city has not hired any new workers yet, but Moreno indicated she would be signing an executive order to streamline the paperwork and background check process.

Somebody’s brother in law with an asphalt business gonna get paid, son. The extra 15% cost that they somehow still get the contract at will not find its way into any officials’ hands they promise.

Those workers are being paid with unused bond dollars from a DPW account, not the general fund.

Moreno also gave an update on her "Lights On" initiative, saying more than 1,800 lights have been repaired so far.

At least there is a goal to shoot for. Good news is almost every block has 1500 potholes so they won’t have to hunt for them.

Bad news is a majority of these roads need full replacement. Like putting a bandaid on a bullet hole.

I feel like only filling 1500 a week is still a net loss (or gain, not sure how to word this one). Like, more form every week than that

Most of these roads need to be torn up and repaved, including the one in the OP.
