Former Tennessee head coach Tony Vitello is now coaching in the major leagues. That prompted a question to Jay Johnson about whether he has any interest in being an MLB manager, and his response was very honest. “Right now, I have zero interest in that at this time. Now, that’s at this time. I haven’t been offered an MLB job, is what I would say. I’m fully into this, and there’s a lot that we need to do to be the best we can be. And I want to be the best program in the country forever,” he said.

Exactly.

The jump from college baseball to the MLB is massive in terms of exposure/notoriety compared to college football/basketball to the pro ranks. The competition level jump is as well. If you're are a college manager you at least have to consider it. Worst case scenario you don't like it, or fail, and you can come back to college. But if you pass on a chance to move up to MLB you may never get another shot.

We've seen this movie before where a national championship coach left unexpectedly for a pro job, and the ending was disastrous for LSU.

Vitello may find himself back in the SEC before long.

If Coach Johnson doesn't get the funding he wants/needs, he absolutely would take a pro job.

Because Jay is currently coaching at one of the top 1% of college baseball in financial support for his baseball program. If he's not happy with the administration support here, unless he gets hired by the Yankees or Dodgers in MLB, he won't be happy in MLB either. There sure has been an awful lot of crying this season about financial support for a baseball program that is in the top 1% of all of college baseball. Certainly more than Sacramento State, McNeese St, ULL, and Oklahoma.

Perhaps most surprising is that he hasn’t been offered an MLB job yet? Maybe I’m biased but I’d absolutely interview him if I was interested in Vitello. Seems a little bizarre to me.

I see it as Jay is fighting for all that he can get, which a good coach does. I don't see it as a viable threat that he might leave for elsewhere.

Thanks for the update.

Is it? Because Tony has been the manager of the giants for some time now.

But thanks for clearing it all up. I was going to melt down without this new thread.

Even if he does, he still made the obvious right decision

I think he'd take an MLB manager position regardless of what funding we give him.

I could see the MLB (at the time) turning their noses up at college coaches. I think it’s a reason Polk at State never got a look.

Jay isn’t leaving LSU for a MLB organization that is strapped for cash just to be told by the GM who will be on his team and who will be in the lineup/on the mound every night.

And the top MLB spenders aren’t going after a college HC.

Vitello jumping straight to MLB is an anomaly, and that is probably understating it.

I believe he's the first ever MLB manager to not have even assisted in the MiLB or MLB. That's probably because the name is right. You are much less of a coach in that position and a true manager.

College baseball, basketball, and football are basically different sports than their pro counterparts in terms of coaching. Yes, the nuts and bolts are the same, but the management portion is completely different.

Your lineups may be dictated to you by some computer nerd upstairs. Many stars may not speak the same language as you. Being a dick to your players doesn’t get you much. The rah-rah shite gets stale. You play over 180 games when you include ST, and that’s before any playoffs. It’s a completely different grind.

I’m not saying one is harder than the other. In college, you are essentially recruiting your entire team day-by-day each season. One slip up and they may head to the portal. In MLB, you can get fired on a whim. They’re both tough, and I don’t think that success in one automatically translates to the other.
