The qualifier "right now" is slightly concerning and it would be a devastating loss for the program, but regardless of whether he would leave for the MLB or not it's very apparent that he is all in on LSU's success.

We've seen this movie before where a national championship coach left unexpectedly for a pro job, and the ending was disastrous for LSU.

No, it wasn’t. The next two coaches maintained a great football program for a long time and each of them won a national championship here. Far from a disaster.

Jay will leave for the majors in 5 years and Vitello will come back to college to be the LSU coach

"deserve" is relative. Jay gets more than 99% of programs in America because 99% of programs/fanbases don't care about baseball as much as LSU. It's hard to argue one "deserves" more when you are already at the top of the market. We can talk about revenue share. But the reality is football and men's basketball are the only two cash cows (even if a lot of basketball comes from TV money) and men's basketball has the greatest growth potential. At least relative to baseball where you can't really grow any higher than top of the market...where LSU is. Regardless, NIL is still uncapped. Just like Wade, Kiffin, McMahon, Mulkey, etc. If a coach wants more NIL money then go shake the tree to get it. Mulkey gets a significant amount relative to the marketplace because the media/TV networks have decided to artificially inflate the market presence of WBB. The public, in general, doesn't care as much about WBB as the media wants you to think it does.

If he were to leave (and I don't think he would) then LSU would still remain one of, if not the pinnacle jobs in the marketplace with no shortage of great coaches who would be interested. It's how LSU was able to take a guy (Jay) from a program he had taken to multiple CWS. It how a school like Mississippi State can poach an established HC from an established program.

There is not better job for a college baseball coach than LSU. There may be a few that are equal, but none better. If Jay were to get a MLB opportunity, then there is nothing LSU could really do to match that. LSU isn't in the MLB. Otherwise, I highly doubt Jay really wants to leave for a lesser college job. He's just trying to do something to create leverage in a situation where, if we are being honest, it's very difficult to do. Jay has done a great job. But make no mistake. His success is as much of a product of the LSU program and LSU's success is a product of him.

It’s not like Vitello got a massive pay bump to take the SF job. At Tennessee his total compensation was about 3.2 million annually.

SF is definitely a nicer city to live in with a 3.5 million dollar salary, but it could be a net reduction in take home pay.

How can anyone strongly say either way what he would do.

I do like when he first got here he said he would not take MLB over LSU. He definitely sounds a little more receptive. He still pointed out just how different the MLB game is and not necessarily in a positive when it comes to managing. Sounds like he would have less control and more people to answer to?

I know people say how rare the idea of college to pro is, but if Vitello is successful I could see it becoming a trendy thing to do. Now I am conflicted, because I wanted Vitello to have success so he stays out of college.

I think it just depends on multiple things.

Wes Johnson left the MLB for the same position job at the time in college. Spare me head coach is different. It was still about the lifestyle. I believe Jay doesn’t have kids, so that may not matter as much. However, my hope is he values potentially more control at the college level. Or being the best college coach or college program. I think he would like to be the Nick Saban of college baseball.

If money is equal it could be argued MLB is more of a grind considering how many games are played. However, maybe he likes more games. Or maybe he likes controlling weather delays.
