Starfield Opinions

Apologies if this has already been discussed but I saw Starfield is set to release on PS5, April 7th. Recently spent some time playing Fallout 4 again, after watching the Amazon series, so another Bethesda title peaked my interest.
Was curious what the general consensus was in comparison to other Bethesda titles for those that played Starfield.

I just downloaded it a few days ago. Spent maybe about 4-5 hours. Just got to New Atlantis.
So far I’m kind of enjoying it. I do feel a bit robbed with space travel at this moment. Guess I’m used to it was expecting No Man’s Sky.
Everything else has been okay. I’ll play more and see how long it will hold my interest and form an actual opinion.

I really enjoyed it for the first 15-20 hours. Eventually, the gameplay loop and planet generation got very repetitive, though. It's been a couple years, so maybe some improvements have been made in that area.

I think I made it like 10-15 hours before giving up. It didn't hold my attention. It was a pretty big let down, imo.

I'd hold off until the update that's coming along with the PS5 release. So far the game is pretty meh, but maybe that will address some of the bigger issues people have mentioned.

While I haven't played it, the general consensus is that while Fallout 4 (not that you asked) is a good game in which Bethesda forgot what a Fallout game should be, Starfield is a mediocre game in which Bethesda forgot what a Bethesda game should be.

It is fine.
The story sucks, the gunplay isn't bad.
But the rest of the game is mid.

Well put. The companions are super meh, and although there are various factions (including 1 that's "supposed" to be bad) you can join, the game basically forces you to be a super duper good guy.
There were parts I really enjoyed like ship building, but other things like the story and colony building are really lacking.

Game just made me want to play No Man's Sky and Elite Dangerous

I'm a huge fan of it (I know I'm in the minority) because I love Bethesda games and modding
It doesn't have the same exploration loop as Elder Scrolls and Fallout because of the space aspect but the additions and expansion dropping the day it releases on playstation are aiming to improve that.
The reveal they did a week or so ago looks great.

i havent played since the PC release so take this with that in consideration.
A completely mediocre game. Not very pretty, innovative, or inspired. It performs competently, does what you expect.
an ok play through that is not very memorable afterwards.

It really is the epitome of "just meh"

I get why people find it boring or "meh", I have issues with it as well, but I have close to 200 hours in it. Being a big Bethesda fan, it makes sense, but it's been a lot of "trying to find the Bethesda fun" for me, which is frustrating with so much procedural content to sift through.
They just announced a big update coming out next week, a Terran Armada DLC and a new mechanic called Free Lanes which allows you to free fly between planets in a system, which will add new destinations and content. A lot of people who did a behind the scenes preview of this content have been raving about it. They also recently released new bounties through the Tracker Alliance. Fans were loving the new quests so I've jumped on that recently and they've been a blast.
A constant tip I hear to help find the hand made content is to pay close attention to the Activities. Most of it has been really good and I feel it's designed to help you make the rounds in their universe.

I enjoyed base building and making full on factories and trading networks
The actual RPG elements were really bad

This was far and away the best part of the game. The only other thing I found really enjoyable was the "Sure Bet" side quest where you had to deal with gravity turning on and off.
This is coming from someone who unlocked all achievements, 100% scanned every planet/moon except two because the fauna was bugged, completed the story and put far too many hours in base/ship building.
It was a game with over 1000 planets but should have only had ten.

Another vote for "it's fine".
As many said it gets receptive. But the first playthrough was alright.
Ship and base building can carry you for a lot of hours.
I do wish that they had of cut down on the number of systems/planets to maybe give more options in terms of settlements/characters/etc.

100% this. One of the endearing things about Bethesda and their game design is kind of Starfield's downfall. They are all about player freedom, if you want to do something, we will let you do it, be it filling your home in Skyrim with cabbages or making a decision that will literally break your game. Space games are about exploration, but that loses it's luster fast if all you can find is cookie cutter points of interest. I think you cut it down to 20 systems to explore, it's a way more accessible game.

Oh, I'm definitely tracking this, hence my first comment about waiting until the update this month before giving it a shot.
I've got just shy of 130 hours in to the game myself, and I plan on diving back in once the update hits.

Looks like a lot of good stuff in that update. Maybe I'll jump back in after Crimson Desert

It’s only worthwhile on PC where you can get the Star Wars mod.
