I loved it and think the bad reviews are overblown. It’s not the greatest game ever but very enjoyable if you like Bethesda games.

I think Bethesda shot themselves in the foot when the narrative of "this is Skyrim in space" started making the rounds and they were essentially "...........yeah, ok, sure".
It's not that at all. What I really love about Skyrim and the Fallout games is the environmental story telling you find that doesn't necessarily have to end up in a quest. You find someone's remains with either notes or computer logs that tell a small story of what happened there before, it might lead to a small quest or running around, it might be contained there, but it really brings the worlds to life. It's nearly impossible to find those in Starfield. I don't think that's what they were necessarily going for with this game, but once everyone got word we were playing Skyrim on a spaceship, that cloud hung over the game for a long time, and maybe it still does.

It seems like they've learned the lesson that they need to manage expectations better or it'll hurt them.
They've been adamant that this update isn't "Starfield 2.0" like Cyberpunk. I think the Toddfather even said if you love Starfield, you'll love this, and if you don't like it, it's probably not going to change your mind.

It’s only worthwhile on PC where you can get the Star Wars mod.

It’s a mile wide and a foot deep. Didn’t keep my interest for very long.

It’s a space game that has bad space gameplay.
If you still enjoy the Bethesda open-world formula they’ve been using for 20 years, you’ll like the game. Otherwise I’d stay away from it

Not really. Most people love the Bethesda formula for having hand crafted created worlds that were fun to explore. Plus, the modding. If you love exploring the same cut and paste POI's on every planet then it would be for you.
Have not played the game in forever and could still tell you where the enemies are, perk mags and main chest locations were based on a picture of the POI.
I imagine there are now mods out there that have tweaked this, but you should not have to rely on them.

I played about 15 hours before it got to meh. Gunplay was good but the characters and plot felt too "for modern audiences."

I quit right before leaving New Atlantis for the first time to start my first mission.
Some lady was about to join me. I don’t want her to join me. I want to be Han Solo and my Robot Chewy.
I set my stats to be better without anyone in the party etc. Figured I’d just wait for the update and try again another time…maybe..

Besides "meh", the other term I would use is "sterile"
The game just felt like it was crafted around the input of a 100 different focus groups so that none of them would be upset.

I think it's a great game.
I enjoyed it and don’t hate on it. I kind of missed a lot of the big Bethesda games so I don’t think I had the same perspective as other people.

Most Bethesda games come out a buggy mess. Starfield wasn't a total mess, but did have some issues at release. I think people were just less forgiving because it was a new property instead of another Elder Scrolls or Fallout.
