An old place I used to work had a customer (in the 90s) do ridiculous stuff like drop $3k in audio equipment into his 12 year old's room alone.

This guy also had us run oxygen free 3/0 (it was about as thick as a broomstick, but this was 30 years ago) to his living room sound system speakers. It was crazy expensive per foot. Rather than run it directly to the speakers (a run of maybe 7 feet to each front speaker, using a fancy version of a floor cable protector,) He had us run this cable up an 8 foot doorframe, across, and back down on each side, creating crazy extra expense. Southern Trace (Shreveport) was great at showing me how people can blow money.

I think it’s an irrational status thing. Kind of like how people will troll around a parking lot for ten minutes to get a “good” spot instead of just parking in the first open one they see.

From amplifier to driver, there is no point on spending any extra money on electronics. Even the $600 or whatever Sonos amp uses a $15 TI 3255 board as its amplifier.

We need to market audiophile bluetooth dongles.

Saw a thing many years ago that audiophile in a test couldn't tell the difference between the most expensive speaker cable out there and wire coat hangers

They conducted audio through a banana and mud and the audiophiles couldn't tell the difference either.

Audiophiles Can’t Differentiate Audio Signals Sent Through Copper, Banana, and Mud in Blind Test

And I thought Monster Cables were overpriced.

years ago I would look up Everest cables online and just sit slack-jawed.

Well yeah. Ultimately, thin exposed wires run from the speaker terminal to the cone. It don't think it cares what brought it the signal to that point.

Cables might not matter, but a quality DAC and planar headphones has left me slack-jawed at music and movies that I've watched for decades. It's a whole new world.

Good headphones make a big difference. DACs are somewhat less of a big deal. Even the apple dongle is a good DAC.

I think a lot of it depends on distance travelled but for most people using 3-12ft cables…. Go to mono price or Amazon.

I’d say the same about video cables.

What about HDMI? The one for our main TV is pretty old.

Most of those that are shorter, like the 3-5 foot range, get a cheap Amazon Basics cable or order from Monoprice. It is all digital, so it either works or it doesn't. I believe the issue with HDMI is longer runs. Our A/V guy at work explained it to me one day about degradation over 50-100 foot runs over HDMI.

with HDMI you also have to take into account how new your tv is... if you want high refresh rates at higher resolutions its going to require an HDMI cable thats 2.1 certified... I still don't spend a ton on those cables as the distances being run are usually short. 3-12 feet max

as long as you keep them off the floor like this it doesn't really matter what cable you use

Someone on AVSforum used to have an sig that was a quote from a high end audio magazine. It was talking about how the product improved the spacial quality and atmospherics of the music. Basically big word after big word for a paragraph.

The product in question... a shelf. Yes, a wooden shelf.
