Should we dissolve the Army and Marines since no one wants boots on the ground ever again?

Credit to Convingtontiger77 for this post, it’s worth a copy/paste:
“If you volunteer for military service, what exactly are you training for, getting paid for, accruing retirement benefits etc if not to fight the wars of the U.S. govt?
To the military folks and those yelling “NO MORE ME WARS”, what wars exactly did you sign up to fight in? The last time US territory was attacked by another nation state was 12/7/1941 at Pearl Harbor, HI.
So I guess I am confused as to what exactly these folks thought they were signing up for?
From Korean thru Present Day, the U.S. military has been sent into harm’s way to places that have not directly attacked the U.S. homeland.
If you sign up and know this, why would you be angry about fighting in one of these conflicts?
Are these folks suggesting that those that sign up should just be paid, fed, and housed to train and for the military to be just another social program for the masses?”

Yea.. it's like hiring an entire fire department and the fire department gets yelled at by the public for going to put out fires in buildings.
It's absurd.
These people who signed up for the military knew exactly what they were getting into and I am 99.9% confident that they are all ready for the task

The reason why some of the founding generation opposed a standing military is because they believed eventually the central government would use that military for it's own means.
Apparently they were right again.

So, now MAGA is 100% neocon ala Dick Cheney for forever wars and spending trillions overseas instead of investing the money back home. Good luck selling that platform to voters later this year and 2028. The backlash will be glorious.

What a stupid thing to say.
Most Americans join the service to protect and defend the United States of America.
Iran is not a threat to the United States nor have they ever been a threat to the United States, nor will they ever be a threat to the United States.
I guess someone could make the case that Iran might be a threat to Israel.
The Middle East is a shite hole. It's always going to be a shithole.
What kind of fool would possibly believe that we are on the cusp of peace in the Middle East. It's laughable.
When you understand that, you can easily see why some Americans feel like the Middle East shithole is not worth a single American life.
If Israel feels threatened by Iran, let them handle it. They are more than capable.

Ideally the point of having a strong military is to not have to use it. Peace through strength. Trump used to believe in that.

A large majority would’ve supported the operation in Iraq if they were found to have highly enriched Uranium hidden in various locations throughout the country and were firing off ballistic missiles throughout the Middle East (with some of those missiles having 4,000 mile range capable of hitting Europe).

I disagree. This day and age most join to get their education paid for and to get free benefits.

I guess I was naïve and didn’t realize at least half of “conservatives“ are (still) actually raging neocons
Here I was thinking maga was a referendum against all of that

Some are tired of young Americans dying for Israel. Crazy I know. Maybe the Israelis should supply the ground troops.

I wonder if this board would be asking these questions if the Dems had won and was entering the Ukraine war?
I’m with Trump on 99% of things but troops on the ground Im not good with. Let Israel deal with their shite. Not to mention Trump ran on not starting wars and being a peacemaker.
To answer your question more directly though the primary purpose of any standing army is to protect the homeland which ours still does simply by the numbers along with the fact that something 50% of households are armed thanks to the 2nd.

Is a nuclear armed Iran not a threat to the interests of the United States?

And the only one in there where I can see a compelling reason for involvement was PG I. The impact of Iraq’s actions on the world economy really were that significant, and Bush I did the legwork to assemble a massive coalition.
Korea? I can see the rationale in the context of the time, but it set a bad precedent in a lot of ways. It also set good precedent. Call it a wash.
Vietnam? Absolutely a mistake.
Afghanistan? Original mission was defensible, but it should have never been a 20 year adventure.
Same with Iraq.
At the end of the day, all of these lacked an exit plan or a clear definition of victory. The only place that didn’t become a basket case for a generation was Korea, and that was because bad governance was accepted in the name of an ongoing threat. Still took almost 40 years to elect their leader.
PG I was the exception, and Bush stuck to it even when many (myself included) wanted to go all the way to Baghdad. He was right.
So, setting aside the justification, what is the endgame here?

Iran and Iraq are not comparable.

Who else’s “means” would our military be acting on?
DC deciding to use the military instead of requiring State's to endorse and supply men.

No, volunteering for service does not mean you automatically want or should have to serve in absolutely pointless engagements that unnecessarily waste and risk lives and US dollars.
No, they’d simply like to defend US interests. Not repeat mistakes
