Cam Thomas Turned Down $30M And $9.5M Offers From Nets; Gets Waived by Milwaukee

He was a restricted free agent in the summer of 2025, signing the qualifying offer worth $5.9 million and with a no-trade clause in September after a months-long contract standoff. The Nets waived him in February to get around his NTC, with the Milwaukee Bucks signing him off waivers. Unfortunately, he got waived again on Monday night. While he can join another team right now, he won’t be eligible to participate in the NBA Playoffs if his new team qualifies for that.

Thomas had the entirety of last season and the summer of 2025 to agree on a contract that would guarantee his future in the NBA. He couldn’t get a deal last season because Thomas came into negotiations hoping to net upwards of $30 million annually as a proven high-volume scorer in the NBA. The Nets had no interest in that and chose not to negotiate with Thomas until he tested the market as a restricted free agent and realized that no team was trying to sign him.
quote:Talk about fumbling the bag
After sitting in free agency for almost three months, Thomas signed the $5.9 million qualifying offer with a no-trade clause. The Nets had put two alternative deals on the table: one, where Thomas signs for $30 million over two seasons, with the second year being a team option. Second, Thomas signs a deal worth $9.5 million, giving him more annual money but making him forfeit his no-trade clause. He chose the NTC, but could never wield it as the Nets didn’t even try trading him all season.

He will fire his agent, but this is all on him. Be realistic about who you are as a player.

He’s an idiot. And not very good, either,

Cam Thomas is probably a top 3 most delusional guy in the league.

He was this way at LSU and the rumors were his mother had/has an unhealthy grip of control over him.
Don’t get me wrong, he was an excellent player at LSU. He was just one dimensional and his mother/manager greatly over valued him. Sounds like that hasn’t changed.

This rivals Demarcus Cousins turning down the Pelicans 2 year, 40 million offer in 2018 while he had a torn Achilles because he thought it wasn't a fair offer.
He proceeded to only play four more injury riddled years making like 12 million.

Welcome to the Shanghai Sharks, Cam.

Wait, he has only earned $18 mil total for his career and he passed up $30 mil?

Two year deal for $30M with a team option for year two

For all of the Pels self-inflicted wounds, dodging that one makes me smile.
The fact that Cousins screwed himself really makes it sweet.

There are some bigger bag fumbles but this is up there.
Nerlens Noel had a really big one a few years ago where he turned down something like 4 years and 64 million.
George Hill, Dennis Schroeder, and DeMarcus Cousins, too (though Cousins was all about his injury).
Cam Thomas was definitely overrating his market value by a lot.

I think Noel ended up suing his agent over that move. Never heard what came of it, though.

He's a streaky ball hog whose points, even when he's on, rarely amount to anything. Any GM that would have agreed to pay him $30 million per would most likely be out of a job before the ink dried on the contract.

Has the pirate king blamed this on Will Wade yet

Missed some really good marketing opportunities if he would've played with the Pelicans.

Was it front loaded though? It’s usually like $18 mil first year and $12 mil the 2nd?
It’s fricking wild that he passed up almost double his career earnings for one year and then not getting anything. Wild.
Imagine passing up $10+ mil. $17 mil after taxes, agent cut, etc means he only ever made around $10 mil.
Cousins career earnings was over $90 mil. At least he had money in the bank

I think we originally drafted him and then he was traded

Its his mom? This is why people shite on things like the amount an agent makes, but it likely would have been worth $10 million here
