Had to give a presentation at an industry conference this week. Some things I’m still not getting:

People raising their phones and taking pictures of a slide when the slide deck is available online.

Women frantically working. Trust me, most of these people are in non critical roles or they wouldn’t have time to be at a conference. During breaks, the ‘good ol boys’ would be hanging out laughing, etc. The women working at their computers like the world was about to end.

If you’re not going to pay attention, why are you here? Chances are nobody will notice so just go up to your room or make it a vacation. Saw several guys just hanging out in the lobby or walking in and out of the room.

“I’m Presenting something that someone found interesting or noteworthy….but I’m upset that they didn’t open their browser and go to the website that I told them to go to. Screenshots might be easier but they offend me. Also I wanted to tell you all that I’m a PRESENTER.”

Before I start a presentation on how to properly salt fries, I always request my coworkers turn off their phones.

Nothing pisses me off more than when I send my employees to a conference and they’re worried about work. I put people in place to account for you learning. Go fricking learn.

A lot of people just hanging around are the sponsors/vendors waiting to lure you from the conference to the golf
Course or bar.

Exactly. People walking out ever other hour to ‘hop on a call’. Why are you even here?

In 37 years, I’ve never been to an industry conference. I’m too busy working and trying to make a difference. A conference doesn’t mean anything in the big picture. Yay for you I guess.

My clients still call when I’m at conference. And any conference I go to isn’t for admin folks like yours sounds, it’s for actual movers

I send a couple guys for multiple reasons:

- represent the company, be seen, shows we care
- networking event. Meet resources/counterparts from other companies
- sort of a ‘break’ trip. Let some vendors take you out for some streak dinners.

But yea, as far as the information presented…if this is the first time you’re hearing about this, you have bigger problems.

Old people do it because they are old; if I do it, it’s because I think most of your slides are pointless, but I found a couple of them interesting, so it’s easier to just snap a picture than to go pull them out of the full presentation.

The autistic dudes walking around wanting to ask you about your job. They're usually the same ones who ask hyper specific questions to presenters. Bro I'm here to get PDHs and eat free food, not listen to you sperg out

Most of the time when the phones are out on one slide it’s because that’s the one they really want to remember and they don’t want to search the whole deck.
