I was also very fond of Don Rickles.

Rodney Dangerfield was a national treasure.
Imagine Caddyshack without him in it.

I’m alright now, but last week I was in bad shape…

I saw him in Vegas in the 1980s. Rickles and Carlin too. Absolutely hilarious.
Correction 1980s. I’m old but not that old.

I’m not quite geriatric yet, im Gen X.. so pretty close to geriatric .
In any case, Buddy Hackett is my dude.. this joke is imo one of the best late night talk show jokes ever told.. the way Carson loses his shite at the end always gets me .

All the comedians mentioned so far were indeed very funny. And they did it w/o making the audience mad or feel injured.
Johnny Carson was the best late night host ever. He could get an entertaining interview out of anyone and stay apolitical. Is it any wonder the ratings are so much lower today? I realize it's a different time today and people watch other forms of entertainment, Johnny's viewership was about 1.5 x higher than the current ABC/NBC/CBS shows combined.

I too loved Johnny and i still watch him most nights on one of those retro tv channels .. but anyone with even a glancing knowledge of how tv ratings work knows that 2026 tv ratings are a whole different galaxy compared to how ratings worked 30 or 40 years ago.. i am old enough to remember when there were only three tv networks.. back then even a middling show like One Day at a Time would get a huge audience share but some weeks would have disappointing ratings.. nowadays everything is so fractured b/c there are a million ways to get content- tv, youtube, netflix, other streaming platforms.. so a show today that gets one-tenth the amount of people watching, as compared to the number of people who watched One Day at a Time in it’s lowest rated week- that show would today be considered a big hit.. even though the USA has double the population it had back then.. just a sign of the times .

I feel like those were kinda the glory days of Vegas.. then it lost it’s luster a bit in the 90s, but came back in like the mid to late 90s.. of course, i did not go to Vegas for the first time until like 2006 .

Jay Leno talked about Rodney on the WTF podcast.
When Rodney was in a coma in the hospital, I went to see him. Yeah. It was right before he died. Yeah. And Joan (his wife) said, Jay, Rodney can't speak or say anything, but I think he can hear you. I said, okay, okay. How you doing, Rodney? You know, blah, blah, blah. I love you, man. All that kind of stuff. So she says to me, she says, Rodney, if, Jay, Jay, put your finger in Rodney's hand. She goes, Rodney, if you know it's Jay, squeeze his finger. So he's squeezing my finger, and I go, Rodney, that's not my finger. And he twitched, and she said, I think he's trying to laugh. And it really made me feel good that I made Rodney laugh before …
