The gun that got away

20-21 years ago we were heading home from my brothers house in Sevierville Tn and stopped at WoodsnWaters in Tuscaloosa.
It was a break and looking tour of the place. My last stop was the gun counter and row of used guns. Lo and behold I spotted a cherry SBE HK, 26” camo for $750. Bet that gun hadn’t had a box put though it. Really wanted another but didn’t need another HK gun so it was put back in the rack and we left.
I could hear it calling my name out into the parking lot but ignored the noise in my head.
20+ years later I am still kicking myself for not going back in and taking her home.
Anyone else regret not taking a gun home?

1980s era Weatherby Mark 5 in a pawn shop in McComb ms. Wood was beat up but the metal and action was immaculate. Wanted 450.00 for it. Kick myself every time I pass that place.

Let me know if you need a second kick in the arse.

Yeah, a Microtech MSAR at a gun store in PA. Apparently had been collecting dust with little to no interest ($1,400 price tag probably didn't help), I knew there was an issue with early versions so I didn't buy it that day as I wanted to look somethings up before making a decision. Came back the next day and it was sold.

Yeah. Went back a few weeks later. It was gone but he had an 80s era A-bolt. Beat up but he cut me a nice deal since I had been there a couple times and I didn’t let it go. Few months later I got a Belgian 12guage A5 from him that was in great shape but seized up from old lube turning to basically varnish. Took a while but it cleaned up great and I still hunt with it.

Few years ago I was at a gun show and came across a MINT Marlin 336 Texan. Guy saw me looking at it and admiring it and said “I’ll do $700 if you want it”. Why I sat that gun down and walked away I’ll never know because I knew it was a fair price considering what Marlin 336’s go for these days and it was JM stamped and clean as a whistle.

I've had several that I wish I'd gotten but didn't:
When the Clinton AWB ban was about to go in, I bought a Colt SP-1 (AR-15) and a Norinco NHM-91 (long barrel AK-47) but passed on a HK91 at $1250 because all three was more than I wanted to spend at the time. That one worked out OK though because I later traded the Colt straight up for a Springfield FN-FAL Match.
Not many years after that I had a chance to buy a Barrett M82 .50BMG for $2500 but didn't because of the cost of ammo.
I've always wanted a Marlin JM stamped 1894 Cowboy in .44mag, longer hexagonal barrel w/ peep sights. Saw one for $600 and didn't move quickly enough.
A handful of years ago a friend of a friend wanted to sell his Marlin 336 .30-30 for $300 but I was of the mind at the time that I didn't want to add more calibers to keep stocking ammo and it was microgroove rather than ballard rifling and that scared me based on what I'd read at the time.

Found a used but in good shape Weatherby Mark V in .257 at a gun store in South Louisiana priced at $500. Talked to the guy behind the counter (owner??) who told me it was a Vanguard. Double and triple checked to confirm it was a Mark V that was just mislabeled and mispriced.
Didn’t buy it bc it felt like stealing. So I told the guy behind the counter who proceeded to argue with me and asked me to leave.
Very weird experience and I still don’t own a .257

Not a gun, but Walmart on College had Winchester Xperts 3" #2 steel shot for $2.50 a box. I bought four cases but wish I had bought it all.

Ruger 44 carbine for $300. Passed it to a buddy, and he ended up selling without offering to sell it to me

Didn't "get away" since I had it and sold it.
Springfield Professional (the 1911 built for FBI HRT). Snagged one for $1900 in mint condition. Sold it a few years later for twice that. Didn't need the money or anything...not sure what I was thinking,

About 15 years ago I won Pick of the Litter drawing at DU banquet. Anything other than gun of the year.
They had a Marlin 28 gauge with gold inlays that I should’ve picked up but my dumbass decided on a painting I really liked.
Pretty sure I won the Regret Contest.

When i worked at elleshue in the 90s and the campus gun ban came into effect a field group had to dispose of a weatherby rifle w a Nixon scope, large caliber 300 win mag or similar. They offered it to me since I hunted and my dumb arse said no, no charge for it .... it was used as polar bear protection for arctic work
