Wife and I are considering one of these two cities for our 10th anniversary next year. Will probably do 4-5 nights. I have researched both and they both look very nice. Just looking for preferences from people who have been to either or both. We haven't been to either.

What time of the year? Makes a big difference in this case. Both are fantastic cities.

Summer/Fall- Boston
Winter/Spring- Charleston

With 4-5 days you could do a trip up to Southern Maine as well- Portland, Cape Elizabeth, and Kennebunkport are all great

I've not been to Boston, but I found Charleston pretty overrated. I guess it's an ok city, if you take all the seersucker-clad Charlestonians out of it.

Would be end of May/beginning of June. Good thoughts though. I think we are leaning towards Boston but if people overwhelmingly said Charleston then I will do some more research.

We plan to do at least one day in Newport if we choose Boston. Wife wants to see the breakers and do some exploring around there.

Both cities are great and you can't go wrong with either. If you do Boston, definitely do a day trip to Newport. We did that the last time we were in Boston and really enjoyed touring the mansions in Newport.

I have been to Boston once and Charleston a bunch of times.
Boston is obviously a lot bigger with more things to do. You could spend two days exploring the Freedom Trail, although that may not be a very romantic thing to do on your 10th anniversary.
You can go to Nantucket from there. Newport was mentioned. That is a nice town to visit, especially if the weather is conducive to walking along the waterfront.

We enjoy Charleston. It is completely walkable and there are plenty of excellent restaurants.

Can’t go wrong with either.

I've been to both a couple of times. Charleston is really fine for a couple of days and that's it. Given its size, that's really all you need. To me, Charleston just feels ... old, slow and reserved. Tons of old people (particularly tourists) around - especially large fat slobs from Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan and the like. Everyone we encountered had that God awful Midwestern accent. Charleston also lacks a lot of that exciting energy from other bigger cities. It's just slow paced (which, don't get me wrong, is probably great to live in). But, if I'm looking for a vacation to take it easy and just stroll around, I'd prefer to do that in the Keys, Naples, Coronado Island, Santa Barbara, etc.

I'd definitely go to Boston 10/10 times, but as another poster suggested, it depends largely on when you go. If you're looking for a winter trip, personally, I'd still pick Boston, but I can see why someone would opt for Charleston then.

The State of South Carolina seems to have turned into basically Ohio South. It's the weirdest phenomenon.

I'm telling you, from tourists to restaurant/bar workers, and some folks around the golf courses, everyone I encountered was from Indianapolis, Chicago, Columbus, Dayton, Cleveland, Akron.

They are all 6'3+, 260+, pasty, bag of moles walking around...cargo khaki shorts right below the knee, American Eagle polo, white nike crew socks...could spot them a mile away.

4/5 nights in May/June is tailor made for Boston. And day trip to Newport is easy. No brainer.

Charleston is also a great trip but that seems like a long time to see the city unless you guys are golfers.

Tend to agree with other posters that with 4/5 nights, Boston is probably the better route. I'm biased as I was born in Boston and though I'm now in Louisiana, I still visit. Been to Charleston as well but feel like 2/3 nights may be the maximum.

If you do go May/June, that's pretty nice in Boston though it can get hot from time to time.

AbitaFan has multiple posts on here about where to go and stay in Boston since he lives there currently. If you get into Cape Cod, I have several posts on that.

That said, I loved Charleston. Like a clean New Orleans. But more to do in and around Boston. You'll be happy either place.

Go to Boston, do all the stuff you mentioned, and go catch a Red Sox game at Fenway (preferably a day game). One of two classic old MLB ballparks left, the other being Wrigley Field.

The people who think 2-3 days here are too many are the same ones who think that the Charleston area only consists of the historic downtown.

You could spend a half to full day at any of the beaches as they all have a different vibe, half a day in Mount Pleasant / Shem, 2-3 days downtown, rent a boat for half a day or take a fishing charter, or get out on the water with some tours. Can easily fill 5 days here.

That said, it's no surprise that Boston is entirely different. Faster paced, louder, larger, plenty to do there as well.

Anyone who thinks everyone here is an overweight dude from Ohio hasn't spent much time here or at least not in the right spots

ETA: June here will be quite warm, so if you don't like the heat Boston is probably the move.

There’s a bunch.

People from places w generally bad winter weather enjoy places w nicer weather.

Chain-migration is a real thing too. Midwesterners are very peripatetic. So when a son or daughter w grandkids moves south, the parents and sometimes siblings will follow.

I-77 is a big part of it. Took them decades to complete and shortly after the first wave came. It makes sense and has been a goldmine for developers. The midwesterners are so used to shitty living conditions, they couldn’t be happier to buy a tiny plot DR Horton shanty 30+ min outside of town.
