The Louisiana Illuminator’s Piper Hutchinson, WAFB’s Chris Nakamoto and Tiger Rag’s Todd Horne have joined forces in order to protect a bedrock principle of the Louisaina Public Records Law: how the state’s dollars are spent. All three sought, via the Louisiana Public Records Law, records seeking details of the university’s direct payments to student athletes.

Athletics is not state dollars!

Is the pay to college athletes a secret? I'm asking because there seems to be at least some news about how much the athletes are paid.

Some is, and some isn't. Direct payments from the LSU athletic department are state money. Payment from TAF is not. Payment from NIL is not. If Rev share goes through the athletic department, that is state money and subject to the Louisiana Public Records law.

My understanding is that universities have mostly taken the position that individual contracts/payments are exempt from public record laws, presumably by calling them student records or similar.

Reporters all over the country have been trying to get details on the players’ financial aid agreements since revenue sharing went live.. seems like it’s only a matter of time before it all comes to a head in court somewhere.

With the university directly paying students athletes, they can file a records request. The athletic department is part of the university. The university is a state school. Now if the money was coming from TAF, then they couldn’t request the info.

If the money being paid is directly from the university, then it absolutely needs to be public record.

If the money is being paid through TAF or some other organization that is not officially run by LSU then nobody needs to see it.

Yea, most of this money isn't state money. GG is piece of shite that probably jerks it to all the notoriety he gets for being an a-hole.

The CSC monitors the schools to make sure they don't go over the cap, currently at $21 million. Provided LSU is staying at or under that, there are no rules they are running afoul of

What each individual player is being paid shouldn't really be anybody's concern other than the player and LSU. These guys just want clickbait headlines to show how much Sam Leavitt is making, or more likely, to highlight how "little" some of the minor sports athletes are getting

The stance from LSU (and most other universities) is that the payments are exempt from disclosure:
A) because they’re student records under FERPA,
B) because Louisiana’s NIL law exempts NIL contracts from disclosure,
C) and because the payments fall under trade secrets.

We’ll see if one or more of those positions hold up in court. Again, the same thing is playing out in other states across the country. My opinion is that the player contracts should be treated as public records in the same way that coaching contracts are considered public records. But since these are state laws, and each state is passing new laws to gain competitive advantage (which is how we got here in the first place), I’m not convinced disclosure will happen without a lot of public pressure.

I truly amazes me there are people that willingly give money to Tiger Rag. You would think this is a death blow to subscriptions but I guess Junior and Lulu are fine with the defamation of the school.

I amazes me that it seems like we are the only college town that the media and talking heads seem to always be looking to F/uck LSU. You think Bama media people were trying to uncover pay schemes before NIL? You think media folks in Columbus are trying to screw over OSU. You think news paper reporters in bloomington are running expose's on Indiana. Its like our news media is always out to screw over LSU some way some angle every year!

Absolutely not. All that will do is breed contention and discourse for individual athletes. A line item of $21MM (or whatever is allowed at the time) spent on rev share should be sufficient.

And remember, these students are not classified as employees. every single school has fought that classification and they will continue to do so.

The Athletic Department may be attached to the university, but the bulk of revenue the AD generates is from private funds, not taxpayer dollars. It comes from sources such as media contract distributions, ticket sales, donations, advertising/sponsorships, merch sales, concessions and parking, etc.

These morons all think just because it goes to “LSU” then it’s public dollars for the people.

Self generated athletic funds are not public money nor are they needing to be disclosed to the public.

In the same manner you don’t get to tell the county sheriff how to spend money his department makes on speeding tickets

If it's revenue sharing, it should be public record
