President Trump says US will tap Strategic Petroleum Reserve

President Donald Trump said Wednesday the U.S. will release crude oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, its boldest attempt yet to bring down oil prices that have spiked since the U.S. launched its war against Iran.
“We’ll do that, and then we’ll fill it up,” Trump told Cincinnati news station Local 12 in an interview Wednesday afternoon. “I filled it up once, and I’ll fill it up again. But right now, we’ll reduce it a little bit, and that brings the prices down.”
Trump did not specify how much oil his administration would release or the timing of the move. It comes after the International Energy Agency announced earlier Wednesday it would coordinate the largest release of reserves in the body’s history, consisting of 400 million barrels of oil, from its 32 members, which include the U.S., Japan, Germany, the U.K. and France.
It was not immediately clear whether Trump’s announcement is a part of the IEA release or in addition to it. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said earlier Wednesday afternoon that Trump had yet to decide whether to join the international effort.
The Trump administration has initially ruled out tapping the reserve, a series of underground salt caverns in Texas and Louisiana. But Iranian attacks against oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz have sent crude prices spiraling to four-year highs as vessels stop traversing the key waterway connecting Middle Eastern oil fields to the global market.
Still, relief might be limited. The SPR currently holds 415 million barrels, according to the Energy Department, making it less than 59 percent full. The Trump administration only added modest amounts of oil back into the reserve after the Biden administration tapped it (drained it to half its capacity) to calm markets after Russia invaded Ukraine.
A part of the storage caverns also suffered damage as a result of those Biden-era drawdowns, which has challenged the effort to refill it.
The reserve is designed to be able to release up to 4.4 million barrels of oil per day within 13 days of a presidential decision, according to the Energy Department. But analysts have said the actual flow rate may be far lower — perhaps 2 million barrels a day — due to physical constraints.

Good. There is no reason why we should be energy dependent on regions of the world that hate us. Open it all up!

When did he fill it up? It went from 695 million barrels to 638 million barrels in his first term. He's only added 18 million barrels in the last year. Those will be wiped out in 9 days if he releases 2 mil a day.

It was Congress that blocked Trump from refilling it at bargain basement prices in his first term.

As a reminder, Trump's reflexive instinct in early 2020 amid the Covid ultra-panic when oil went to $25 or whatever was to buy it up to fill it.
That exactly correct instinct was thwarted by the MSM and a dipshit Congress intent on labeling it a "bailout for big oil" - about the stupidest criticism one would be capable of making.
Later, under the guise of "relief from the effects of the Ukraine war", Potatus Biden used the SPR for a grand vote-buying scheme, leaving us in our current depleted state (and actually damaging the infrastructure somewhat).

So if Trump does this under the guise of "relief from the effects of the Iran war" is that good or bad?

Your post was downvoted by OP and his alter. You've been Ragin Cajuned lol. Dude makes these weekly O&G digest threads but then gets mad at opposing views that are bad for truck nut baws. I once had to explain the concept of Energy Independence to him, then later about the importance of the USD remaining the petrodollar. You should have been around here in 2022 when OP was sucking Biden off for stiff regulations on Big Oil and practically sucking the Potato's potato on draining the reserves monthly.

wouldn't need to if he didn't start an illegal war.

Would have been nice, but COVID relief checks in an election year was more important for Congress.

He comes up with one bad idea after another. He’s addicted to chaos and the attention it brings him. It doesn’t matter if people die or get ruined financially. He’s not America first, he’s about himself. Has always been that way. I cant imagine how he didn’t get that Nobel Peace prize he cried for
