Under Ireland the saints most consistent position as far as hitting on in the draft is secondary, especially using mid round picks. With that in mind doesn’t make sense to pay that kind of money

Adebo and Alontae averaging $19mil per year. That's a hard pass.

D’Angelo Ponds would be another option in the 2nd or 3rd.

That's not how that works. If you cut him before the 3rd year you paid him $42 mil for 2 years, or $21 mil aav.

Where teams try to win on these contracts with higher guarantees over every year but the last vs the total contract average is by hoping the next contract will be relatively cheaper in guarantees and they can be stretched and cut for eventually less than the original total value.

You have to look at the guarantees over the total contract minus 1 year, so he actually won this one as if they cut him after year 2 he makes $21 mil over 2 years rather than $20 mil over 3 (though now he has to try to get signed for another big contract to offset losing the last year, but from a team perspective the Titans lost this).

When he's good he's good, when he's bad he's awful.
