Canada set to surpass 100,000 assisted suicides — more than the country’s WWII death toll

quote:

Canada is set to pass a grim milestone in its medically-assisted suicide program with a total of 100,000 citizens projected to be euthanized by the government before its 10th anniversary on June 17.

The Great White North’s MAID (Medical Assistance in Dying) program will soon cross the sickly six-figure threshold, according to The National Post.

Ottawa’s most recent data shows 15,767 Canadians were euthanized by the state in 2024 — 5.1% of all deaths in the nation that year.

About 45 Canucks per day are being euthanized, according to the report.

In 2021, a total of 9,842 Canadian people were euthanized.

And it's not just people with terminal illness which I would understand

quote:

The controversial program has come under renewed scrutiny after reports of same-day approval for MAID applications and claims that patients were pressured to needlessly end their life while suffering from depression.

The family of 26-year-old Kiano Vafaeian are calling for reforms after their son, who had Type 1 diabetes, who suffered seasonal depression and had vision problems, was approved for the suicide procedure and euthanized on Dec. 30, 2025, in British Columbia.

“We never thought there would be a chance that any doctor would approve a 22- or 23-year-old at that time for MAID because of diabetes or blindness,” mother Margarat Marsilla, of Ontario, told Fox News Digital.

Coming soon to the nationwide USA

quote:

New York has become the 14th state to approve a version of doctor-assisted-suicide, with the bill passing by a narrow margin in the state Legislature last June.

Well, people ending their weak gene pools should be a positive for society in the long run, so in a way, this is a positive story

It’s a good start. I’d like to see a couple more zeroes on that number though.

I would be first in line to sign up. If I want to go then I’m going. Otherwise I know where to get the shot

You can't force people to live..

I heard this was implemented because the funeral homes lobbied for it.. Just joking, I didn't hear that.

The literal suicide of the West.

But not to worry, they’ll make up for the population loss by importing more Third Worlders.

Something like this is a minefield of morality issues. I've thought some on this, and, ultimately, I think since none of us chose consciousness, I think one should be able to choose to opt out.

Who says being euthanized isn’t the same level of fun? Not like anyone is around to tell us about it.

This is the danger of a program like this. All you need is one doctor who's willing to sign off on euthanasia and anything can become a qualifying condition. Type 1 diabetes already meets Canada's "incurable disease" benchmark, so all you need it a doc to say you've got nerve pain and depression and voila! This was originally pitched as compassionate death for people terminally ill with cancer, Alzheimer's, etc., but it's obviously gotten out of hand already.

But should doctors have it as a tool in their bag as a “treatment” option to lob at people suffering a mental health issue? We all know the answer to that is no.

Do they have the equivalent system of our Social Security? If so, those 100k missing out on being paid when they aren't getting old has to have an effect on their bottom line.

We’ve had to euthanize a number of dogs over the years and it’s a pretty peaceful process. They put them to sleep and then they stop their heart.

I’m not going to lie, I have given thought to this topic before and I’m not 100% opposed to people having this choice available.

I know it’s impossible to say where you draw the moral line, but for the obvious cases, I’m ok with it as a humane option.
