As a law abiding tax paying citizen, I truly don’t understand why there is a need to pay taxes on a property that’s paid for.

Because you don’t really own it.

It’s just money math.

If no property tax, it would be tax on breathing.

$ for local govt and services…

As it turns out, people who own property have money to pay taxes. Most of time.

This is the problem with modern governance. The “services” part is either dogshit or nonexistent.

Idk but I’m about to self insure. Insurance only covers a total loss anyways. Maybe I’ll just do fire this year but why pay $4k for a 25k wind deductible

Of all the bullshite taxes I rank property tax as the most bullshite. You have to rent your lot from the government. You don’t actually own your paid off home.

Yeah its BS.

You're taxed when you earn it, spend it, and own it. Bullshite.

I agree. It pisses me off much more than even income tax

It’s not really tax on the land, but rather tax on the services that the parish/county or city/municipality provides such as fire protection, police, library, infrastructure, etc. But, aren’t sales tax supposed to cover some of those items?
I hate taxes.

Isn't property tax the oldest known tax? Honestly if there weren't property taxes rich families would own every bit of land by now.

I absolutely loathe property tax time, but at least it's itemized in a way that shows you what amounts are going to what purpose. Most of those purposes are to improve and maintain the community in which you reside, so there's actual tangible results. It still feels like theft, but it's better than most other forms of government theft. At least it stays local.

Income tax, estate, and a few others are far worse.

Property tax is the government telling you to tip them even though you’re doing all the work of maintenance and upkeep.
