I have a very specific situation that I need help understand the options moving forward. I’d like to understand the process and not make mistakes moving forward, but I have zero experience with short term disability.
Any suggestions?

Your mom? Your dad? Your sister? Your brother? Your children? You could literally talk to anyone about it. You’re only limited by your imagination.
EDIT: And You could be severely limited by your imagination if you’re about to go out on STD. Best of luck temporary retard!!!

What is the nature of your short term disability? Like if you're short term retarded then there's no point in giving you a complex answer that you can't understand, but ironically you won't need the answer any more after the term is over.

What exactly are you trying to figure out?

Well, definitely NOT HR before you get a better understanding

I would start with the provider of your Short-Term Disability benefits if you have them.

Call a licensed agent for the company who issued your STD policy.
They have a fiduciary responsibility to answer your questions honestly and explain your benefits.

It’s basically a 3 party insurance that picks up your tab of your salary sometimes it’s 60-80-100% of your pay. Your hr rep will help you out and it depends on your policy some can start after you were off for x amount of days your policy with hr will tell you exactly what the terms are

What's you specific question?
Start with HR if you know the agent or broker call them directly.

Call your short term disability insurer. They'll tell you what they need. I did it for 2 months with Aflac. Piece of cake.

Aflac's disability claims process is the easiest in the industry.

Your provider.
HR is, or should, to tell you to contact them directly, as they cannot give guidance on what you choose to do medically. Get with provider on options available and then you will have to make the decisions.
