Javonte Williams contract is why Love should not be the pick at 8

Javonte Williams just got 3 yr/24 mil. With 16 mil guaranteed.

Average of 8 mil per year

Love will get about the same average per year and cost the number 8 pick.

Conversely you could sign Hall, Walker, or Ettienne for between 8 and 10 mil and still draft a player that is an impact and saves on cap space compared to a similar free agent at the position.

Those 3 players will probably get paid much more than that, and they are all 5 years older, which is a lifetime in running back years.

The argument of "You cannot draft player X because you will have to pay him" can apply to every player you pick.

You’re also getting the absolute BEST and most explosive years of his career. That corresponds with the rookie window of your hopefully franchise qb and in theory you could get proven players at other spots who have much longer shelf lives than RBs.

It kinda goes both ways. I’d never want to pay mid to late 20s RBs anything near 8 figures

Yeah I’m sure the Falcons wish they had signed Tony Pollard for $10 million in 2023 instead of drafting Bijan. If Love ends up being a Bijan/Gibbs/Saquon level player like he is expected to be then it would be a great pick. You get an elite playmaker for the prime years of his career instead of spending a good chunk of money on an aging back

Fantastic. We can rack up garbage time yards while we get blown out by 30.

You don't spend the #8 pick on a RB or WR.

Jesus people. Have we learned nothing from Ricky Williams?

You just gonna skip Reggie and the Super Bowl and go all the way back to Ricky?

I’m fine picking or passing on Love. This is a draft full of tented RBs, so passing on him is fine; however, you do it to grab a different premium player at a position that won’t be as deep, not because you don’t want to pay him.

Disagree with you there. This is a relatively bad RB draft. There is huuuge drop off after Love - there may not be another RB picked until late 2nd or 3rd round. If you want to draft a surefire starting caliber RB this year, there is one.

I’m only going by stuff I’ve read or watched, so I don’t stand by my statement. If this is indeed a bad RB draft then grabbing Love is probably more important.

Personally I come into this as I do every other draft: I like whomever they pick, because I trust in their process, and I will wait and see if it pans out. They always know more about their team than any of us do

Unless they do something stupid with a clearly bad reach like the Raiders have a history of doing, I’m all good

Ricky was a good RB for us, just not worth blowing your entire draft to get him.

Don't just look at Love as a RB. Roger Craig from the 1980s was just as big as a threat at RB as he was at receiving for the 49ers. If Love adapts well to multiple roles as claimed he could be a big help.

And for the record, if Bain (sp?) is there at eight I would pull the trigger to get him first but he'll be gone by then.

That's not the argument he's making.

Would rather pay a rb $10 vs a wr or DE $20, draft WR/DE with 8.

We really don’t know. It could go one way or the other.

I may be misremembering but was the more important running back on the 09 team Reggie or undrafted Pierre Thomas?

Was about to post the same thing. I’ve been saying for weeks drafting Love at 8 is a mistake.

A 1200 yard back with double digit tds is only getting 8 million a year.

And I figured we could get Allgeier for about 5. He might go lower than that.

How many playoff appearances have they had since drafting him?
