Good Lord, it's becoming a stereotype at this point. Pray for those people killed, even this mentally ill psychopath. What kind of unhinged shitbird adult starts shooting wildly with dozens of kids present? Even if it was a "family affair"

The only silver lining I can see here is that maybe some future school shooter out there will give pause and think "if I do this they might think I'm a crazy tranny loon in the media" and put his gun back in the safe

They might end up doing us a favor by dissuading young boys with mental issues from being lumped in with them

So...when are we going to get serious about doing mental health evaluations for gun ownership?

If we aren't going to bring asylums back, we need to get serious about restricting gun ownership for obvious mental health problems.

We already subverted the 2nd Amendment with forbidding felons from owning guns.

This is a public safety issue now. Either start taking mental health seriously as a nation, or start taking steps to protect citizens from the mentally impaired.

So you want to stigmatize getting treatment for mental health issues?

You want to make mental health treatment even more unaffordable?

You want to make access to mental health treatment for patients that ACTUALLY need help harder to get?

Who could have known that guy was mentally ill, just by looking at him?

I don’t disagree with you in principle. But if this was a normal dude for decades (who owned guns), and more recently started this whole trans thing, your suggestion likely wouldn’t have prevented him from owning guns.

No.

I want for this country to start taking mental health seriously. I've been calling for that for years on here.

But nobody cares to do that. So now we have to do something.

I'd prefer that we take away the stigma that having mental health problems is something to be embarrassed about and hide or ignore, and make people more comfortable with getting treatment.

Start viewing getting treatment on the same level as seeing a general practitioner. "It's healthy for you."

Who gets to define this? "Sir, I noticed that you are a registered Republican. Obviously, you are too mentally unstable to own a gun."

Throwing out the most extreme example of system abuse is disingenuous.

There's really no suggestion, law, or amendment in the universe that can prevent anyone of any mental capacity from owning guns. There's so many ways to get your hands on one it doesn't even matter what kind of legislation you throw out there.

It's already against the law for felons to carry, and how many of them are able to get their hands on guns? Even some serious firepower

There's no law one could put on the books to stop someone from acquiring a gun who really wants one. The best we can do is limit new sales to flagged individuals as much as possible and maybe even encourage upstanding citizens to carry more. The cats already out of the bag, it's time to get creative

You think that would be extreme? That's the sole aim of "red flag" laws.

Your proposal to “get serious” about mental health screening for gun ownership would directly cause those three things… you realize this, right?

Stigmatize getting help for issues by telling Billy bob that he won’t be able to go hunt this year if he talks about his depression to the shrink.

Now… last year there were roughly 15 million gun purchases.

Tying just ONE mental health screening per purchase would add 15 million appointments last year.

There are about 60k psychiatrist so each would be responsible for 250 appointments a year, roughly 1 a day.

If each sees an average of 5 patients a day (for an hour) that is 20% of their caseload simply being a one off screen for a gun owner.

The hyper majority of these will have zero issues.

This means that roughly 20% of the clients being seen by the mental health professionals aren’t really needing to be there.

This DIRECTLY will lead to people who DO need help not being able to afford it nor getting an appointment when they need it.

All because “why don’t we do something about itttttt”

Oh and by the way we have a MASSIVE shortage of mental health professionals so this wouldn’t make that worse now…..

Would it?

It needs to be treated as a mental disorder, not some bullshite lifestyle. Stop lying to these freaks and endangering the rest of society.
