Spotted the start of a house fire

Had just come down from a roof inspection. Had a new guy with me. We were at my truck talking. I was looking over his shoulder and noticed a weird smoke. Told him to turn around a look. He agreed it was odd. We walked up to the detached garage and saw the blaze. Ran to back door and banged on the back door. Older couple. They had no clue what was going on. Got on the phone and called 911. Poor lady tried spraying with her water hose. Luckily StG fire department got there fairly quick and were able to contain the fire to detached garage and walkway.
With the amount of smoke that was billowing out the house, I can imagine they have lots of smoke damage but could’ve been way worse. It took all of 3 minutes for it to go from me noticing the smoke to flames coming out the roof. Scary stuff.

I think you may have just saved their lives.
Strong work.

My shed burned down years ago and it's amazing how violent a structure fire can become, and how quickly.

Was it the house you were inspecting?
You are suspect #1 Mr Arsonist

When I saw this space heater fire demo completely engulf a room in under 3 mins, I’m surprised anybody sleeping ever gets out alive:

Funny thing is it was a space heater the wife left on in the garage for some stray cat she was trying to keep warm

Saw a car fire once and it happened the same way. It was fully engulfed in about 90 seconds.

I learned a lesson the hard way but had a very fortunate outcome. Was welding a pipe fence this summer and I've always just welded above grass then let it burn around where I'm welding and then put it out with my foot. After it's all burnt it won't catch again. Well, this day there was a slight breeze and I was in the back corner of the lot. No water out there. Was doing my thing and the grass caught fire, wind picked up and it moved so fast I had a hard time reacting. Jumped a fence to put out the fire and it moved so much faster than I had experienced before. Fortunately I carry a fire extinguisher with me but it wasn't readily available. Jumped back over the fence and went fishing for the extinguisher. Got over to the fire and that fire extinguisher worked incredibly well and incredibly fast. But you don't have much time with the extinguisher. Homeowner was out there watching and had his son sprinting out there with a fire extinguisher. He was half way to me when I got it out.
Funnier part of the story is that the husband was a firefighter. He wasn't home though. He gave me a hard time in good humor when I saw him again.

Thankfully, you had a burner phone.

Which one of you flicked your cigarette butt onto that roof?

The most important thing you can do is to close doors to rooms in your home. You would be surprised how well that works in containing fire damage to only one room.

The ol' "I just saved 2 people's lives today" brag.
Good on you.
Good on you.
