The average tax refund is 22% higher so far this season, Treasury Secretary and acting IRS Commissioner Scott Bessent told CNBC’s “Squawk Box” on Friday.

The 2026 tax season opened Jan. 26, and the IRS has not yet released official filing data. It’s unclear how many days of returns Bessent’s figure reflects or what comparison period he used.

However, “early data can be deceiving,” Andrew Lautz, director of tax policy for the Bipartisan Policy Center, a nonprofit think tank, wrote in a tax season guide on Jan. 22.

In 2025, the average refund for individual filers was $3,052 through Oct. 17, according to the IRS.

I haven’t filed yet but I’m skeptical that I will pay less in taxes this year since I don’t work overtime or receive tips and only have one child under 17. Oh well, good for the rest of the country.

I just hope I don’t owe.

I had about 10k in 1099 income that I have to pay taxes on so if I break even that would be a win vs paying thousands every April for the last 12 years.

Next goal is 36% less tax paid.

Baby steps to 100%.

Hate to break it to you, we'll always be paying taxes on something.

Maybe we go to the "Fair Tax" system and don't have income/FICA taxes (though doubtful), but taxes overall are not going away.

Only 40% of people pay taxes so that means a lot of welfare queens getting a new weave and iPhone this year

So early filers who don't work are getting a lot of money back. This is one of the most self owned threads I've seen.

We adjusted our withholding amount because of this, so it went from about $3K to $1k owed. I am not sure why the OP is significant..you get a bigger ‘refund’ if you have tax credits or you over-withhold. The amount we paid is about 2.5% less than last year relative to income changes, so that pretty much lines up with inflation.

How are you folks getting so much refund. My average last few years has been around 1000, I just pay it forward to next year's taxes and state tax has always been negative so I end up cutting a check to them

I was going to break even without the OT tax legislation. Getting back $3K because of it.
