Scruffy feels like he would be part of the disappointed crowd, but he doesn’t have a unibrow.

Pretty much on point. Everyone wants every game to cater to their interests, which is causing a massive watering down of a ton of mainstream games. Don't like Soulslikes? Cool, don't play Soulslikes; don't ask for Soulslikes to become less of a Soulslike. Same for RPGs, roguelites, and others. But it's been going on for a while. Hell, I love the Mass Effect trilogy, but moving from a more traditional RPG in ME1 to a Gears of War cover shooter in the next two games kinda sucks for those of us who enjoyed the first game for what it was. But, it made "the thing" more popular, so the industry did it to everything. But that was when there were fewer games made and less choice available to the gaming public. Now, we can absolutely say "frick your mass appeal amalgamation; I'll just go play something else" in a way we never really could before, so the pendulum is starting to heavily swing the other way.

This is why AI powered game development may be a good thing. Humans can lay the groundwork, but let AI evolve the game in customized paths.

Almost like choose your own adventure, except AI is doing the heavy lifting of the adventure development.

Personalized game development will be coming.

Or, it just gives more people the capability to be able to create the games they like with much less barrier to entry. IE being able to code or investments. If you don’t have to cater to investors demands then you can make the type of games you enjoy without worrying about how much money you make.

A.I will never be able to create games as good as the studios that are similar to the picture below.

Also, funny that this is the bunch who always bitch about A.I. in video games.

Weird how that works…

This is kinda the state of everything and not just gaming. It's why people need to disconnect from the internet a bit more. You can watch it seeping into tigerdroppings when posters regurgitate what some youtuber/news media person tells them what to be upset about. It's nuts. It's sad.

I check out when I see an article or reporter reference tweets. It's laughable.

People typically seek out youtubers who say the things they agree with, rather than the other way around.

The above meme is about loud voices from people who don't buy games, demanding and forcing changes into games they never intended to buy.

The mythical and elusive "modern audience"

The sister meme to this one is the : If you don't like that what I am doing, don't buy my game. . .OMG, I can't believe you didn't buy my game, ist/phobe???"

you can argue this all started when activision bought blizzard and the suits got more involved in gaming and pushed the actualy gamers out of these positions in these companies

For me it was when EA bought BioWare

It's even worse, many AAA games were outwardly antagonistic towards the player base. They worked with gaming mags to push the idea that "gamers" were dead and that there was a new "modern audience" they could appeal to.

Because AAA studios these days are filled with people who hate the industry, the product, and the players.

That describes pretty much every franchise. The constant chase for more and more sales eventually leads to watered down mush.

Final Fantasy and Assassin's Creed are the biggest examples of this.

You cant compare final fantasy to assassins creed. Rebirth is a great game. FFXVI ane FFXV are at least really good games as well even if you dont enjoy the combat system as much as the older games.

Assassins creed on the other hand has sucked for pretty much the last decade.

I was just coming here to say FF was GETTING watered down with 11, 12, and 13. . .

But everything from 14 on has been high quality

I am not into MMO's, but everyone seems to love FF 14

15 wasn't bad

16 was pretty damn incredible

Watered down is COD, Far Cry, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Borderlands, and such

This industry is a fricking shite show for a ton of different reasons. There are good games that come out but they are way way way more few and far between than only like a decade ago.

So many people have so many different motivations and reasons in the industry from devs wanting to put propaganda to execs wanting to leach players dry of money to massively bloated teams and way more.

It needs at least a partial crash and reset. AAA does at least. They’re so far out of touch it’s insane

Just to not be a doomer some games like RE9 Phantom Blade Zero and a few others coming this year look very good. The state of play had some good stuff. Then the chuckle fricks follow that up with shuttering blue point. Close bungie instead maybe?

I think the biggest issue is that shite like Call of Duty and Madden print money.
