Part of their buyout plan. The Teamsters are throwing a fit over it and suing. Bet it's beause of losing Union dues.

"I'll bet $150k you can't find another job."
Who wouldn't take that?

In this market, it’s not a risk free move

What exactly are they suing for? The chance to stop members from making $150k for doing nothing?

I can't remember how many years ago, maybe twenty, but at the time the Teamsters called a strike because UPS was going to leave the Teamsters retirement plan and start their own for their drivers. The Teamsters retirement plan was largely financed by UPS at the time, and would have been crippled without UPS.
I suspect the situation is no different today. That, or something like it, is why they are suing.

Unless you work in health care, finding a job right now is nearly impossible.

They are suing because the DRIVER and not the Union gets the $150K. If UPS said Drivers get $100k and the Union gets $50k, the Union would be bussing the drivers down to collect the checks.

Oh for fricks sake, this isn't even remotely true.

They can't find a job that pays mid 6 figures and lets them work the hours that they want to work. Oh and 3 months PTO

Imagine being a 30 year guy wanting to retire anyway.
My old company decided to offer a buy out and one of my coworkers who had 30 years in was already planning to retire at the end of the year, was going to tell his boss the day this news broke. He made bank walking out the door.

At a time when the amount of online ordering is continually skyrocketing --at risk of driving most brick and mortar shops out of business--- it strikes me as odd that UPS is so desperate to cut drivers?
Sucks as their salaried delivery personnel instead of the FED Ex subcontracted get the package out of your hands like a hot potato model generally works a lot better for the actual customer.

Same. Automated delivery still seems very limited in the majority of the country.

Probably looking to get rid of the long time drivers and replace them with younger cheaper ones.

Doesn't UPS have two separate driver unions as well? An older one thats actually pretty solid, and the newer one thats just a big cash grab?

A current union that is just a cash grab?
Blasphemy!

Good point. Another chapter in corporate America's ongoing struggle to eliminate decent paying jobs.

I looked at the contract - the bargaining unit is very broad (basically every non-management or non-office employee). The Teamsters Union is the only union.
