Information continuing to emerge from eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) claims that the M23 armed group has detained Erik Prince, the American national known as the founder and former head of the private military company Blackwater.

According to the reports, Prince was allegedly arrested earlier this week in the city of Uvira.

Sources say that when a coalition of forces fighting alongside the DRC government re-entered Uvira last month—after M23 had withdrawn from the city—foreign mercenaries under Prince’s leadership were among those accompanying the coalition. These mercenaries have reportedly been seen for some time in ongoing fighting in the surrounding highland areas.

The same sources allege that Prince was arrested at a hotel in the Muchepe area, together with soldiers assigned to his security, before being taken to an undisclosed location.

As of now, the AFC/M23 coalition has neither confirmed nor denied the reported detention of Erik Prince.

When questioned by journalists on Friday about the claims, AFC/M23 deputy spokesperson Dr. Oscar Balinda said that the matter falls under the responsibility of the group’s military spokesperson, Lt. Col. Willy Ngoma.

I dont wish harm on anybody and I hope he gets out of there in one piece, but when a man willingly chooses to be a merc, he takes his chances. We shouldn't put lives at risk trying to rescue him from his misadventure.

Agreed…however, what I remember of Blackwater is they can hold their own in a fight. I’ll bet he doesn’t stay captured very long or a lot of the M23 will meet their maker.

This would true for me but there is no telling what this old boy knows....depending on the intel he could provide it may very well be a national security problem. Like it or not their are people in the world who are dangerous and many times it takes a dangerous person to keep them in check....that sometimes means doing and knowing shite that would put the rest of us off our feed. Have no idea if this person is included in that group but I don't doubt that the group doesn't exist....

He’s got people for that. He will either buy his way out or a bunch of people are going to end up dead.

He’s a national treasure. I pray for his safe return. I highly suggest listening to him on any podcast in which he has appeared. He’s an amazing man.

He aligned himself and FSG with China and Chinese interests.

Not one bit of US resources should be used to retrieve him.

the frick he is... he's been on the wrong side of American interests quite often... when it comes to allegiances, he's is pretty strictly about whatever serves HIS interests, above anything else... don't fricking kid yourself... this dude is a piece of shite, and personally, they can do whatever the frick they want to do with him...

i know he'll just buy his way out, but he deserves any and everything done to him there, and more, IMO

The same people who held the terrain, failed to detect or prevent rebel forces from reentering the city, failed to exfil when they did so, and ultimately failed to prevent their boss from being detained/kidnapped?

Those people aren't going to manage any sort of successful surgical HR operation. If it's a kinetic play, he very likely dies in the process.

It'll be $ or diplomacy.

The King of UAE will 100% pay any ransom.

They are good buddies. Prince organized and trained UAE’s special forces from startup to elite force.

So how is it ok/legal for an actual company to get paid to go and kill other people? Countries can "legally" go to war and their soldiers not be held accountable for those actions unless they commit war crimes, but a private company going around and blowing shite up and killing people is not that.
