CLINTON, La. (WAFB) - The East Feliciana Parish School Board has approved a four-day school and work week beginning in the 2026-2027 school year.

The updated schedule will feature extended instructional days Tuesday through Friday, allowing students more time for focused, high-quality instruction and targeted academic intervention.

District leaders said the decision comes after deep reflection on how to best achieve the district’s strategic priorities. They said the extended day model supports deeper learning, improved engagement, and timely support for students who need additional help.

Similar schedules in other districts have helped improve attendance and support teacher recruitment and retention, district leaders said.

The Board said it remains committed to maintaining high expectations and ensuring a smooth transition for students, families, and staff. Additional details will be shared at efschools.net as planning continues.

East Feliciana Parish Schools previously tried the 4-day school week from 2008 – 2013. During that time, there was concern about longer school days and low district performance scores.

Not news.

East Feliciana Parish Schools are so high-achieving that they could skip an entire academic year and their kids would still test higher than any other school district in the state.

No expert but keeping kids longer in a single setting doesn't seem like it would support deeper learning. But accountability and parental involvement does.

Do school districts ever use their heads? How are dual income families supposed to tell their boss "hey bro, forgot to tell you, I'm only going to be able to work 4 days a week now".

Or worse, they need to find someone to watch their kids on that extra day.

Seems like code for "we're out of money and can't run the A/C/heat for that extra day"

I guess they'll do the same thing that they do during the summer

It all comes down to budget. One less day of bussing. One less day of utilities. One less day of food service (though many district provide meals on the "off" day, especially if they have a federal grant that provides nutritional services funding). These spread out rural districts are especially costly in terms of transportation. EF switch to one HS and one MS, meaning half of the kids in the parish gets bussed pretty damn far.

frick IDK. I don't have kids. It seems like a lot of folks expect the schools to do most of the parenting nowadays.

LOL good luck parents. Those of you that tried to be good parents but also work 5 days a week now have a latchkey situation or additional day care costs.

I would expect nothing less from East Feliciana. This is probably a lifeline to that crappy little private segregation school in Clinton if it hasn't caved in on itself yet.

You're not wrong. But moving to a 4 day school week will put a strain on families; even the ones who are involved in their child's life but has two full time working parents and no other options.

Like a camp? Maybe the camps can get them ready for the school weak so that they can focus and concentrate. We can call them concentration camps.

Already used those brownie points in the summer amigo. Maybe the help is tapped out or in a 5 day a week school themself. Students in 4 day a week schools should have a lot of babysitting opportunities though TBF

The school system's logic seems wild. How much learning is happening in hour 8 of the day?? How much more is going to be squeezed out of 9 & 10?

West Feliciana? The high school with walk through metal detectors at the front door is a mecca place of higher learning?

That school is doing fine. Achievement and enrollment wise.
It sucks that Zachary is being turned upside down and it’ll be Baker 2 in x years and accordingly, the students moved north.

Figure it out. Same thing a lot of people do for weekends, holidays, and summertime.
