One of the worst performing school districts in the state that’s already last in the nation and they’re gonna cut back to four days a week. Ignorance has no bounds…..

West Feliciana? The high school with walk through metal detectors at the front door is a mecca place of higher learning?

Every school in the country should have them and probably would if they could afford it

Correct. It's an inconvenience for the good kids, but the "at-risk" students like it because they can let their guards down and have a safe place.

I don’t care about the schedule but please spare us with all the “this works better blah blah”

You want one less day to go in. Just say that, people would accept a lot more if you lead with honesty.

East Feliciana Parish Schools previously tried the 4-day school week from 2008 – 2013. During that time, there was concern about longer school days and low district performance scores

That first attempt was just a practice run. Things will be different this time!

I could support a 4 day instructional calendar with the 5th day used for enrichment and tutoring opportunities maybe every week for challenged students, but optional or every other week for the rest.

For example, Johnny is behind in Math, the 5th day is used as a study day to catch up course work and tutoring instead of depending on afterschool tutoring where no bus transportation is provided.

You could use the fifth day as a day to schedule field trips and activities.

You could also float the day so let’s say one day like last week was deemed too cold, you just flip the week where the Friday noninstructional day is moved to Monday. Same can be done for Hurricane days.

Do school districts ever use their heads? How are dual income families supposed to tell their boss "hey bro, forgot to tell you, I'm only going to be able to work 4 days a week now".

Schools aren’t supposed to be babysitters.

The updated schedule will feature extended instructional days Tuesday through Friday, allowing students more time for focused, high-quality instruction and targeted academic intervention.

This sounds awesome. Would love to see this happen in my district.

I have a friend that just bought a house in Clinton and he enrolled his kids at that private school. Didn't even consider the public schools in that area.

The best performing school systems in the world have way less in-class time compared to the US.

Are you talking about Silliman Institute?

Looks like they're actually let a few black kids in instead of "putting them on the waiting list".

quote:

the student body's makeup was 98.18% white, with 2 black students out of 502 total.[7] Meanwhile, Clinton, the city the school sits in, is 58% African-American; public schools in East Feliciana Parish are 64% African-American

That was their reasoning when they changed it pre-Covid. I guess those busses burn some fuel.
