I didn’t want to hijack the other truck thread on price.

Help me reset my mind on “40k miles” is too much.

Growing up I was told “5 years old and 40k miles” are when all the problems start.

Tell me it’s ok to buy 5 or 6 years old and 30k to 50k miles if well maintained, accident free and doesn’t come from up north.

I’m 52 and this hasn’t been true at any point in my lifetime of driving.

Look at when your car’s standard manufacturer’s warranty ends.

That’s, statistically speaking, when the problems start.

Nowadays, a couple months old & couple thousand miles are when the problems start. Sad, but true…

I target 2 years old, 25000 miles and prefer a corporate lease vehicle.

Depends on the vehicle.

If it’s a Lexus prior to the engine overhaul 40k miles is just getting warmed up

If it’s a used BMW 40k miles is prepare thy anus

Not long ago I was putting 30-40k miles per year on my personal vehicles. I still drive alot. 40k miles is absolutely nothing on any vehicle built within the last 25 years. Whatever the least reliable raggediest piece of shite made in the last 25 yearz in your own mind is, 40k miles is nothing on that.

That's been dumb since the 1990’s. Outside of recent troubles and a few notable exceptions over the recent decades, vast majority of engines, transmissions in the EFI era can go hundreds of thousands of miles with just routine fluid changes and timing belts (if equipped).

It depends so much on the model, year, motor and transmission.

Some are disposable at 5/40k, others are just getting warmed up.

YouTube is your friend on this question.

I've seen how people treat their leases.

I don't have a better metric though. Since most low mileage purchases are going to be this route.

Maintenance is key.

Some vehicles will develop issues at 35k

Some will run like a top until 350000

The question is a when, not an if.

And then, the question is, "who's paying to fix it?"

Which is why a good warranty is a blessing

You’ve never ridden with my company’s people in their company suvs or cars…. They absolutely abuse those vehicles. Clean and oil changed, yes. Driven hard and crazy, also yes.

Pretty much all GM trucks(5.3V8, 6.2V8, 3.0I6), Ford V6, RamI6, Toyota V6 truck engines are failing, recalls abound, fixes are failing. YouTube is full of people having issues with their vehicles
