I did not know how fast RB Caden Durham, I knew he was fast, but a 10.2 in the 100 fast, that's ridiculous speed.

His speed has never translated to the field. Now, to be fair to young Caden, there has never a good running scheme since he’s been here. Even the Will Campbell and Emory Jones line did not run block well.

Hopefully we’ll see better schemes, better blocking, and better performances, and everyone will finally realize how talented this kid is.

They did, but not for a running game centered on a running back.

They were taught to block for a mobile QB, just like every offensive line in today's game.

Offensive lineman are no longer taught how to build a pocket or open a gap for a running back to work through. Most offenses are designed to be "high-powered", consisting of one read, a check down (usually the running back out on the wings or maybe in the flats), and a QB "scramble" (which consists of either a down field run or avoiding the rush long enough for a receiver to adlib a route long enough to lose the defense. Basically: every offense is designed to be backyard football. "Run to the garbage cans and cut in.")

I've said it numerous times: Les Miles would thrive in today's game. Design an offense around the power I with a fullback leading the charge and clearing the gap, allowing the half back to break into the second level, and you'd dominate today's game. Add a QB who can deliver an accurate pass to a receiver running a post or fly route on a play action, and you'd run up the score.

Teach a line how to build a pocket, and teach a QB how to work a pocket, instead of abandoning it to scramble away from his pursuers (a lost skill these days).

There isn't a defense out there built to stop that.

Do all these things and you'd build a dynasty. Nobody would be able to build a defense to stop you for years. And their high-powered offense that can score in a few plays? They're rendered ineffective because they don't get on the field because your offense is controlling the clock and going on 15-20 play drives.

What's old is new. And unstoppable.

In high school he was in the Texas news quite a bit as both a football player and a track star.

You’ve just described Iowa.

Back in their sr yr of HS Jalani Watkins, Durham, Charles Ross, and Dakorian Moore all ran in the 100M Tx 6A state final. Watkins won with a 10.19. Moore was also committed to us but eventually wound up at Oregon

That was his absolute best time ever. He was more consistently running in the 10.4-10.5 range. He isn't training for track anymore and has put on some muscle mass and has had a couple of injuries since he's been here. He's got caught from behind too many times for me to believe he is still a homerun threat. Will break off some nice longer runs from time-to-time, but he's not going to be leaving DB's in his wake on 60+ yard runs IMO.

Serviceable, but needs to be our #3 rb. Was REALLY hoping we would get Lacy. Better players and better schemes with the o-line should definitely benefit our running back group this year.

Or vision. Hopefully Smith can get him tuned up.

Watkins was legit 10.2 but Durham as I recall was in the 10.4-10.6 range in that race. If Durham ever ran a 10.2 it was elsewhere.

Watkins hit a 10.01 in spring track last yr at LSU but I think it was flagged as wind aided.

Curt Cignetti enter the chat. When they broke down the OL block scheme in slo mo, it was nice to see.

Thats old news. He was the 2nd fastest in High school in the 100 meters.

His speed was apparant as a true freshman and he basically won the South Carolina game for us two years ago.

Since injury , he has not had the same speed, He needs better vision though

He should good balance and tackle breaking ability, but the speed/suddenness certainly wasn't apparent.

There is track speed and there is football speed. Durham may have had some good track times in HS, but the speed doesn't fully show up on the field. Compare that with a guy like Jeremy Hill. He ran a 4.6. But it was rare that anyone ever caught him from behind
