Whatever you have budgeted to spend on a grinder, go buy the $99 dollar one from academy and spend the real money on a good vacuum sealer. Unless you’re just not trimming worth a shite I have never been slowed down by even a basic grinder, all of them can process faster than you can trim.

I have a Weston, it's either 3/4 or 1 HP. It'll grind as fast as you can feed it. I've heard that the Meat Your Maker brand is really good.
If you're just grinding one deer it's probably overkill. I usually freeze what I'm planning to grind and then after season is done thaw it all in the fridge so I'm only having to clean the grinder once.

Bought this on sale after seeing you talk about it. Processed a deer earlier this year with it. Worked great

I agree with the 3/4 hp Weston. If you are going to make sausage there are a few other things you will need. Get a good scale for measuring meat/seasoning ratio. A good vacuum sealer is good to have as well. I’d stay away from the $59 version at Walmart. It will frustrate you more than anything.

I have the Cabelas Carnivore, I think its the 3/4, would have to look.
Cabelas, LEM, Weston, Meat Your Maker are all reputable brands.
1/2-1HP is plenty for one deer at a time.

I just bought the Meat 1hp, it was on sale for Black Friday with the foot pedal for like $420, probably overkill for what I need as far as size/power but it was only like $50 more than the .5hp with no pedal. So basically for what it cost for me to get one deer processed I've bought a big grinder as well as an 11lb sausage stuffer. I'll be processing 1 or 2 deer a year, making sausage/boudin, etc. I've got 2 deer in the cooler to process this week, will do mostly all ground meat mixed with brisket. I started last night and it ripped through 20lb in ~2 minutes, was quite impressive.
Previously I've used my Kitchenaide/grinder attachment to just do a brisket and that was atleast an hour. If anyone is considering that route I suggest not even bothering.

I have a Cabela’s,think it’s 3/4 hp,it’s the # 8 size.Have had it for years.
Grinds meat as fast as I can feed it.I advise buying the foot pedal if it doesn’t come with one.

Probably over kill but we never over work it, I'm going to probably spring for the dual grind adapter for it shortly. Anyone used one yet? Getting down to sausage size in one pass would be nice.

I have a larger setup as I process more deer. I said I but really it’s a family thing. I have a Cabela’s 1.5 horse #32 mixer meat tenderizer. Also have a meat slicer and 30 lb stuffer. The stuffer is a game changer. I have had the grinder for 12 years and it works flawlessly. That being said I bought a backup from Meat that looks great. I built a smokehouse and smoke jerky and sausage. We average 12-18 deer a year. This equipment has paid for itself 10 times over. When we get a few of us together it’s a fun day. When I am by myself it is work
but I still like the accomplishment.

For a grinder, consider the LEM or MEAT dual-grind system. This eliminates having to grind the meat twice. You can also still single grind by just using the "stuffing plate' for the first grind stage.
Read the reviews on both. LEM dual-grind seemed to have better reviews.

be smart here.
Buy something reasonable. If you use it a lot and wear it out quick, invest in something more expensive.
If you don't use it as much as you thought you would and it sits on a shelf in the little room under the staircase 51 weeks out of the year you wont feel so bad.

I almost went with a dual-grind but it was like $150 extra and was trying to stay around the $400 mark. Honestly I thought I was missing out but I did 20lb last night on my single grind, the initial grind took about 2 minutes, and the second grind maybe 4 minutes. I can see the benefit if you're doing a TON of meat but for the DIY guy doing 1-2 deer a year it's probably not necessary.

Good advice on the grinder. I’ll add that I swapped to using bags and a sausage stuffer for packaging my ground meat and it’s 1,000x better than a vacuum sealer. Cheaper too

# 12 BigBite (LEM) get the tenderizer attachment as well.

You can get on from norther tool for about $85. I had one that lasted 15 years. My second is 10 years old and going strong. Crazy to spend hundreds on one when that one will do everything. My first on probably did 80-100 deer and probably 20 hogs. I expect this one to do the same. LINK

I would invest in the LEM tenderizer. It’s hand operated and will be something you can pass on to your kids. It’s so easy my 5 and 4 year olds used to love to do it. They got a kick out of it for some reason and it’s will work faster than you can feed it but it’s a bit more expensive. LINK
