Just need to vent...

I've been playing for a good while but have never been a good golfer. I keep trying and trying and trying. Pretty athletic dude but feel like a damn robot trying to swing with 77 thoughts constantly running through my head. Same round I'll duck hook some and I'll slice the living shite out of some. I'll play good, solid golf for a good bit of a round and then it just COMPLETELY falls apart.

My swing pace is all over the map. I have very tight hips so my torso rotation is wildly inconsistent from not just round to round, but shot to shot. This also affects my posture and has me standing up at contact far too often, leading to more inconsistency.

The worst part? I have friends who are envious of my swing! They don't get how I can be so bad given the distances I hit and look of my swing. It looks great, but holy hell the little things within the swing are so inconsistent.

Played yesterday. Shot a fricking 105...my scores are literally anywhere from 85-105, just all over the map. So over it. It's getting to the point it's not even fun. I probably just need to bite the bullet and get lessons but I'm not sure it's even worth the investment at this point.

Anyway, if you're getting pissed off at your golf game, I assure you it can absolutely be much worse.

I’m convinced any decently athletic dude can get to a 10 HCP with some lessons.

Golf is one of the only sports you can play and be good at into old age. Get the lessons.

Defiantly should stop watching YouTube for swing thoughts!
Get some real lessons! Lower expectations. You're probably not as horrible as you think.

This and get a lesson. I recently stopped overthinking my swing and it’s helped

sack up and get you a handful of lessons and hit the rang with intention and not just to go hit balls.

It's mind blowing how much people whine and bitch about how they can't figure out their swing, or they're too inconsistent, etc but haven't gotten a lesson or 3.

The vast majority of the best players on earth worked with elite level golf coaches on a daily/weekly basis from the time they were small children.

You think you can shoot respectable scores without any instruction? How retarded.

If you aren't actively taking lessons or practicing with the intent of improving your swing, short game or putting then how can you possibly be frustrated when you don't improve your scoring.

Dude, just swing away. I try to have zero swing thoughts or maybe 1 max. Most of the time it's just "Trust your swing."

i saw a guy on the range this year that was using probably 5 training aids at the same time and videoing his swing. No telling what his swing thoughts were. Saw that dude and just laughed and thought that there is no way this guy is ever going to be a good golfer.

You can't be in your head that much. Forget everything but a few thoughts and just keep your eye on the ball. If you have a good swing, you're over complicating it.

It's a tough game mentally. Gotta find some fun in it. Sometimes that means playing match play or scrambles and not worrying about individual scores. A lot of times a simple change in mindset leads to more comfortable play and improvement. It's not that serious at the end of the day. It's meant to be a hobby. If it's not feeling like that, take some time off.

1 point I will say is that lessons, constantly playing and practicing is not even necessary to improve at golf. I've been going to the range 2 times a month lately and improving. The mentality is better. The swing thoughts are fewer. The expectations aren't as high. Not giving a damn actually frees me up personally. Pick a target. Pick the appropriate side to miss the target. Pick a shot shape. Hit 1 checkpoint in the backswing and black out on the downswing.

I enjoy shooting a good round and playing good golf, but it's just being out there that's fun to me.

I feel the same sometimes, but I lack talent and have not done the work required to get better.

Most people that play golf, even the great players, can get disappointed in the game at times.

Try to simplify as much as possible.

Also, I always try to remember that I’m not getting paid to do this and nobody I play with cares whether I shoot 76 or 93.

It’s a hobby.

Who am I kidding? Golf is an addiction. Start smoking- it will be easier to quit.

All that being said, it can really be disheartening to play bad for a stretch. It’s a maddening game. The ball sometimes seems determined to not go in the hole.

I’ve tried profanity, but no combination of words I use improves the strike.

When it really is going bad, I try to get very basic. Feet together swings to keep from swaying.

I also keep a log of good holes for the year. It wasn’t all bad this year.

Also, buy something new. You cannot buy a game, but that does not mean you can’t have shiny new things for your addiction- I meant hobby.

Best advice that I ever heard was that everybody has a natural swing, refine it but don't abandon it.

Most bad golf starts with the grip.

Unless you're willing to hit 500 balls a day, just play and enjoy it.

We all have days we want to throw the clubs in the lake. We don’t because we’re either getting scuba gear or new clubs tomorrow. New clubs might help so we usually pick that option.

But we don’t quit.

I’ve had what most folks would call great rounds and only one swing thought was ever required.

Slow is smooth, smooth is fast. I fix a lot of golfers I play with by just getting them to slow down the takeaway.

So relax, slow it down and enjoy the day. Always remember breaking clubs is restricted to putters after missing 3 footer.

You're a mental head case at this point. Put the clubs up for a few months, and then try to make the ball go forward next time you play. I put no effort into the game outside of a monthly round during spring and fall months and shoot an 85 on a bad day (80 on a good day ). I've had to stop trying to mimic what works for others and focus on how my body delivers the club to the ball with as little effort as possible. Once I accepted that part, I play a pretty boring round of bogey golf with a handful of pars.

Gotta flush the head game though. It's a game killer.

Exactly zero. Why pay when I can figure it out myself? (My philosophy for the last 20+ years lol)

Y’all are right. Not only should I buy a couple new clubs to convince myself they will change everything, I should also spring for a few lessons from a local pro.

I haven’t read thru the comments but I highly highly recommend anything by Bob rotella. He’s a mental golf coach and has helped the best in the world. Playing with athleticism and an unconscious mind is the goal. Trust me read his books. My personal favorite is make your next shot your best shot. Get back to me after you get results. Good luck

8 hcp here and have not gotten better in years. I don't get to play much so I don't care about scoring rather than getting on the course and having fun.

However, my irons are by far my worst clubs in the bag and the reason I don't score lower. They are also the oldest clubs in my bag and could probably use replacement.

When asked the last time I played why I don't just sack up and get fitted for irons I told them "then I won't have an excuse as to why my iron play is so bad."

Just have to go out there and have fun. Stop thinking about it so much.

I played a twilight round over thanksgiving where we were pressed for time. Didn't have much time to think about each shot, just got the yardage to the middle of the green and picked a club so we could finish with enough light. That was the best round of the year for me.

My expectations for a couple of years now is to have one good shot per hole. Could be a great drive, long putt, getting out of a tough bunker with a chance at par, maybe just a punch shot back into the fairway. Maybe I make birdie, or I could make a double. Lower your expectations and get some lessons. A good coach will simply everything for you, and get you back to enjoying the game.
