A nice little $68,000 pay raise snuck in at the last minute

The lead attorney for the East Baton Rouge Parish school system is staying on the job for at least two more years and will make $68,000 more a year annually courtesy of his bosses on the school board.
In a split vote, the board approved a two-year contract extension and pay raise for General Counsel Gwynn Shamlin at a special meeting Monday night.
quote:
In 2018, then Superintendent Warren Drake tapped Shamlin, who was no longer practicing much as an attorney, to return to become the top legal official
quote:
Shamlin did not attend Monday’s meeting; local attorney Dennis Blunt sat in as general counsel instead. Shamlin did not respond to a subsequent request for comment.
Superintendent LaMont Cole was also absent from the meeting.
quote:
In 2022, the board renewed his contract, increasing his salary by more than $18,000 a year as well as giving him 3% annual increases.
quote:
This time, Shamlin’s salary is increasing from about $170,000 to $238,000 a year. That makes him the second-highest paid administrator in the school district. His salary is now slightly higher than the salary earned by Deputy Superintendent Adam Smith, but less than the $285,000 a year that Cole makes.
quote:
Board President Shashonnie Steward said the figure was settled on after she researched how much lead school attorneys are making in other larger urban school districts across the country. Steward said she received help from the Washington, D.C.-based Council of Great City Schools.
quote:
In addition to the pay raise, Shamlin will begin receiving a $3,600 a year car allowance. Also new for him is district-funded electronic devices and cell service.
quote:
Monday’s meeting was called late last week, and the meeting room was almost empty. Ordinarily, the board would have held its regular meeting this Thursday, but it opted instead to hold just one meeting this month on Dec. 4. That meeting had just one item, Cole's annual evaluation.
quote:
In an online comment James Finney, a board watcher, questioned the rush.
“This item could and should have been handled in the regular course of business, without need for a special meeting,” Finney said.

Not a lot of top end attorneys would work for $238k per year.
Thats $132 an hour. I guess the benefits boost that some.

Generally a general counsel has no outside practice.

Being a general counsel of a large organization such as this can be completely life sucking if you're engaged at all.
If he's doing the work, $170k was fricking cheap

I’m guessing his summers are pretty easy.

Im not saying good or bad for the raise, but if its who I think it is, Shamlin is the only one in those Council meetings that knows what he's doing. The only professional in a room of clowns.

I wouldn't. He'd be responsible for all maintenance and construction contracts, including the bid process, and if something were to happen, injury or contractor messes up, well he gets to deal with that too
General counsel has to deal with 5 different areas of law and be somewhat competent about them to be able navigate some of it, leverage outside counsel when appropriate (and usually not have much of a budget for it), etc.

Is he also having to supervise other staff attorneys? Prayers sent.
And handling all the litigation you know comes their way.
Honestly, having worked in local govt this is going rate for your General Counsel of large or wealthy counties.

Schools waste money news at 10...
Schools have so much federal and state money they don't know what to do with it. So rather than giving it to the teachers (they say they cannot because it is obligated to a other area) they create new positions or give others massive raises.

It's good to be the king, or in this case the lead attorney.

They are just gearing up to sue St George over the potential of a new school district.

SG schools can’t come fast enough

Someone needs to appeal and/or sue these people for unjust salaries. Below average working professionals typically enter administration of public school system jobs, they probably don’t even put in 40 hour weeks, and their performance based on parish test scores are terrible. Stuff like this makes me glad I left the state. Appeal this.
