Louisiana Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser on Wednesday said Border Patrol's mass sweeps in the state's neighborhoods have stoked fear among residents and disrupted the state's labor force.

Nungesser said that he has received "a dozen calls" from business owners in the state who are facing labor shortages as workers with valid work permits remain at home out of fear of being detained by immigration agents.

"They said 'we're getting rid of the criminals,'" said Nungesser in an interview Wednesday. "These people, a lot of them have played by the rules and have a work visa and now are fearful."

The Department of Homeland Security has identified its target as immigrants without legal status and with criminal histories. However, law enforcement records obtained by the Associated Press show that less than a third of the 38 arrests that occurred in the first two days of the operation involved people with criminal records beyond traffic violations. Officials have not released the total number of arrests so far.

"I've got to believe there's a better way," said Nungesser, who serves as the second-highest ranking elected official in state government. "We all want the criminals gone ... that they're pulling these people out of homes — I just don't know. And especially during Christmastime — it's not a good situation."

quote:

Nungesser also said that he had tried to get a meeting with Landry for "three months" to discuss this and a number of issues and has "not been successful."

I'm sure the handful of people who actually give a flying frick about immigration post here and will celebrate the detaining of lawful immigrants (and anyone else) but the situation here sucks.

The big businesses that pay him off complained that they can't get their illegal laborers to show up. They may have to hire actual citizens and pay a fair wage.

Yes, there was a better way but Biden and the Democrats did not play by those rules and actively imported millions of people illegally, along with not enforcing laws on the books. We would not be in this situation if "the better way" was enforced to begin with.

Heard that from career politicians my whole life. Create a mess then act like you have a solution without proposing anything.

They are mad at Trump because he had to rip the bandaid off and is actually doing something instead of talking and trading stock tips with their Washington buddies.

Since Nungesser is now going to go against Landry, maybe it’s not too late for the Governor to reverse his political payoff promise to Billy and revive the Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion project.

frick off.

Regular CITIZENS were offering agents gumbo. The real 'silent majority'. Not the whining, pouting, off putting, shrill, leftist, minority agitators called protesters.

Detaining is NOT deporting. My wife was once detained because the car she was driving was the same make and model of car used in crime. It didn't cause any irreparable harm.

Notice how they leave out that all 38 were illegally in the United States. Just because they don't have a criminal record for shoplifting, doesn't mean they are legally here.

Where did it say they were detaining lawful immigrants? I see where it said lawful immigrants were afraid of being detained, but nothing that said any had actually been detained.

Traffic violations can be serious. I'm not happy to be sharing roads with non English speaking, unlicensed, uninsured drivers or any combination thereof that break traffic laws.

Ah yes. Another 4cubbies crying and wailing 300 post thread about “unfairness” when legal Americans are not allowed to break a single law. Unlike the millions of illegals in this country.

While the legal Americans pay taxes to hand illegals free benefit after free benefit.

Annnnnnd it begins……………

Did Biden order Trump to set unrealistic, arbitrary quotas and detain US citizens and immigrants here lawfully? When are you going to stop blaming Biden for Trump's failures? If Trump is as competent as you claim, he can withstand valid criticism.
