2026 NFL mock draft: Yates' first-round pick predictions

5. New Orleans Saints (3-10)
Francis Mauigoa, OT, Miami*
New Orleans has seen promising play from rookie quarterback Tyler Shough and could opt against drafting a top signal-caller, even in the top five. Taking an offensive tackle in the first round for the third straight season might seem odd, but the Saints could move 2024 draftee Taliese Fuaga from right tackle to right guard in this scenario.
Mauigoa has been a three-year starter for Miami, playing all but 13 of his snaps at right tackle over the past three seasons. He has excellent mauling power and size at 6-6, 315 pounds, and he holds up extremely well in pass protection. Mauigoa allowed a pressure on just 0.5% of dropbacks this season, the best of any FBS offensive tackle. The Saints, meanwhile, are 31st in pass block win rate (54.5%).

We should not be drafting an OT with our first pick

I am so sick of this bullshite, can't we ever evaluate each position individually on the OL?

Yeah let's move Fuaga for the third year in a row to a new position. That would be such a Saints move.

His Mock is exactly why we can't win anymore games.
WE have to stay ahead of the Raiders, Jets, AZ.

We should not take a right tackle in the top 5

I still think EDGE rusher has to be the pick.

A top 5 pick HAS to be an elite talent at a premium position - QB, WR, OT, CB, DE.
We used our last two #1s on OTs and it would be malpractice trying to pick another one to move a career OT to OG. Shough looks to be a real deal, so QB is out. That means our #1 needs to be BPA at WR, DE, or CB.
There doesn't appear to be any top 5 talent at WR or CB this year, so we're either trading back (if a QB falls) or taking one of the edge rushers.

at 5, he had only 1 ED and 1 WR taken. That means the top corner and potentially any WR or DL we want is available. I doubt they'd take OL. But Mickey.....

Not bad.
Mauigoa realistically could play any of the 4 Oline spots, Fuaga moving inside to Guard would be better than any guard you would draft in 2026. Probably better than any Guard that will hit FA as well.
People don't like drafting another OT/OL but Oline is the Saints biggest need.
Actually Mauigoa or Spano at 5 wouldn't be bad choices if both of the top pass rushers are gone.
ETA: Trading back would be ideal but 1) You can't assume some team will give you a fair trade for move back especially in a year when the QB's seem suspect at best. 2) Mickey does not trade back

Hate the thought of another OT pick, but drafting giant Samoans is rarely a bad idea

WR is not a premium position. This is a misconception. DT is more of a premium than WR, and that would round out the 5 most important positions. Otherwise you are correct; top 5 pick should be one of the premium positions unless there's an allworld talent at a non premium there.

how many fricking Ts do the "experts" think we need??
if we draft ANOTHER tackle, that will be the 4th 1st round pick in the last 5 years at that position... you cannot build a roster with that much repetitive drafting at a singular position...
this is a lazy as frick draft projection

No. It's an astute one, because right now we don't have.....

If we draft another OT in the first I’m ending it all

Disagree that wide receiver isn't a premium position. Maybe 10 years ago it wasn't, but with how wide open the sport is today it has become one. Also having a true number 1 can be extremely helpful for a young QB. If you are able to draft an elite receiver then that makes Olave the number 2 and Vele the number 3. That offense would look a lot more dangerous than it does right now. I think Tyson, Tate, and Lemon are all big time prospects who I would be happy if we drafted.

Or, draft a straight up guard later in the draft.

The pick has to be who they feel is the best player. Position is irrelevant
