Egypt and Iran complain about planned World Cup ‘Pride’ match in Seattle
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Egypt and Iran, two Middle East nations that target gays and lesbians, have complained to FIFA over a World Cup soccer match in Seattle that is planned to celebrate LGBTQ+ Pride.
Leaders in the nation’s soccer federations publicly rebuked the idea of playing the match June 26 at Seattle Stadium, which local organizers say will include a “once-in-a-lifetime moment to showcase and celebrate LGBTQIA+ communities in Washington.”
In Egypt, the soccer federation issued a statement late Tuesday saying it sent a letter to FIFA “categorically rejecting any activities related to supporting homosexuality during the match.”

So who on the Left is going to openly criticize these two countries? Do it now. Stand up for your cause. We are all waiting.

i'm shocked Egypt and Iran didn't go and and buy some LGBT flags to provide for the games.

I don't keep up with soccer and have no idea if this celebration is planned, or not. Nonetheless, I agree with Iran and Egypt. I'm not going to celebrate homosexuality, either and I will not attend any event where it is celebrated. Downvote away.

The world would be a better place if those based camel herders threw a few Sounders fans off the mezzanine.

Hopefully this ends in both groups fighting each other. Two birds, one stone.

The media would just end up blaming straight white Christian men for it.

Yeah for some reason the alphabet community has latched on to soccer as its official sport. It is even worse for women's games.
My daughter plays and a few years ago we went to a Women's National Team game in California and the amount of pride flags and pink haired butch lesbo's was astounding.

As well they should as should any nation with a moral compass.

As funny as this is, it's embarrassing.
Hosting an international, big deal event is no time to insert local politics, especially divisive ones.

Yeah, real brave of the theocrats in Cairo and Tehran to clutch their pearls over a rainbow flag in Seattle while their regimes are literally executing gay teenagers and throwing lesbians in prison for corruption on earth. Spare me the cultural sensitivity lecture from governments that still use cranes as gallows for 19 year olds caught in same-sex relationships.
This isn’t about respecting different values. This is two authoritarian states demanding that the rest of the world conform to their homophobia even when they’re guests on someone else’s soil. FIFA didn’t force Egypt or Iran to bid for the World Cup knowing full well it’s played in liberal democracies with Pride parades. They wanted the prestige and global spotlight but only if everyone pretends their laws aren’t monstrous.
Seattle isn’t forcing players to wear rainbow armbands or making the Egyptian team march in the parade. They’re just refusing to sanitize their own city’s identity because two dictatorships might get triggered. Good. If Tehran and Cairo are that fragile, they can forfeit the match and stay home. The rainbow flag isn’t going anywhere.

I never thought I’d be in solidarity with Egypt and Iran…. But here we are.

They should both simply refuse to play that game.
