Instagram - An old timer talking about the tradition.

I’ve become a big fan of pipe tobacco over the last few years, and just learned that Cornell & Diehl are releasing a new blend this Christmas called “Fires on the Levee.”

“…inspired by the Christmas Eve tradition of lighting fires ablaze along the Mississippi River in Louisiana’s Parishes to guide Papa Noël.”

I’d never heard of this tradition before. Getting liquored up by a bonfire near the river the night before Christmas sounds fun. Just curious if any of you river folks participate. Would love to see some pics if you have them!

Yep wife's Grandmother is from Vacherie. It's pretty awesome but hear the Lutcher side of the River is much better.

I’ve been a few time. But the drunks throw bottle rockets in the air and some shoot into the crowd. No thanks.

Nothing more to tell except the chance of randomly being struck by a bullet has gone up

It’s a good time. I know not everyone can come participate because we all usually try to visit with family on Christmas Eve. If you’re an empty nester or do family Christmas another day, try to make it.

Perique tobacco is grown in that area, which is why they did the bonfire blend.

At first I thought that was innovatively packaged beef jerky and was intrigued. Then I realized it was just tobacco and lost my erection.

My dad used to make them as a kid in the 30's and 40's.

They'd use cane reeds so it would pop, and old tires to burn a long time.

Just stay out of the town of Gramercy near the bridge, and you'll be away from the trouble crowd.
We usually watch in the Paulina area. Many families in that area.

We had friends with a grandma who lived on River Road and would hang out there all night.
Unfortunately, the grandma passed and the family sold the house.

Photos from the Paulina area:

The best one to see is actually on the other side of the bridge, south of Gramercy.

Blood, Sweat, & Bonfires

Hint, hint. This is thier model for this year.

we usually ride by the weekend before to check out big one they do every year and then drive back and stop at the Manresa area (it's nice and quiet to visit) followed by a stop at Houmas House to see the decorations

I was just gonna ask if there were any pictures of the scene. Nothing better than drinking around a bonfire on a cool fall or winter night.

I drove by last year. Yea there are parts that are "urban" but most of the area is harmless. It looked like a lot of fun if you know someone with a house on the levee who is throwing a party. Without having anywhere to go we just drove up and down and looked around once then went home
