O-lineman attributes?

I am curious to know what to consider when finding O line talent in the portal or recruiting high school talent. Other positions seem easier to judge statistically. That is QB, running backs, Line backers, safeties are easier to evaluate statistically. Is there a grading system for OL play? I ask because seems O-linemen stand out when the make mistakes and miss blocks allow sacks etc. If they are doing a good job they are hardly mentioned.

1. Mean streak.
Our current OL severely lacks this.

its one thing to be 6'6" and 320lbs, its another thing to be quick and bendy at 6'6" and 320 lbs. oh yeah, a brain helps too

1. Mean Streak - b/c someone else said it
2. Discipline - reduces penalties
3. Attitude - This is for all positions

Here are key traits to look for…

Move Laterally and Mirror Defenders: Agility and quickness are essential for offensive linemen to effectively block in space, move laterally to pick up blitzes, and mirror defenders in pass protection.

Strong lower body. So tired of watching our Olinemen land flat on their back at the feet of our QB. that is just one of many qualities that need improvement.

They have to be able to not fall down when a force equivalent to a gentle breeze or a tiny feather is applied to them.

There’s obviously more to look for, but these are some factors I feel need to be looked at…
O-Line Talent in High School:
1. Competition. Both in practice and gamedays. If they are not used to blocking decent competition it will take them longer to adjust. Linemen from N. LA tend to adjust much faster than linemen from S. LA. I believe it's because of the competition level in the trenches. Just my observation!
2. Mentality. Linemen have to have a certain dawg mentality. This can't be coached. It's either there or it's not.
3. Be a good teammate (this goes for all).
(I didn't include mechanics. This should be pretty obvious, and the recruit would not be rated if he didnt have the proper mecahnics to play the position)
O-line Talent in College:
1. Does he fit the offensive scheme?
2. Does he dominate their competition at the other school?
3. Is he better than what you have currently?
4. Is he a culture fit?
If yes, come on down.

You have to have the size while still having ability to move well.
First rule of blocking is to get to your spot, whatever that may be. If you don't do that, nothing else matters.
For portal...
It is such a huge jump in physical aspects and performance from high school to college. Did they make a big [enough] jump in all aspects or did they only progress below average.
If they didn't make that "big jump" they are behind and likely will not catch up. It's fine for regular recruiting but not for the portal.

When Miles was at LSU I just wanted some OL that were more athletic instead of the heavys he brought in. Now I? tired of the athletic ones and want someone that can move people off the ball, and work as a unit. I really am interested to see what the kids can do if the players on the roster can do if they would actually hit more at practice.

Toughness and good footwork. Everything else can be taught.
