Rogue Ale filed chapter 7-straight liquidation-and closed unexpectedly.

Not surprising since they alienated their employees and became known as a shitty place to work

When beer was my main source of drinking, I used to enjoy their stuff.

Years back, I drank a lot of their Hazelnut Brown Ale. It disappeared from our area for a time. When it returned, I didn’t care for it any more. Not sure if it was me or the beer that changed.

A $10m judgement sure didn’t help.

A little over a decade ago I worked at Coors in Golden. The head of brewing came in to speak to all of us and when asked about craft beer he said it was "a fad". Coors had just started AC Golden and Colorado Native; plus Blue Moon. I thought it was a myopic view of the beer landscape.

AC Golden is no more but led to Casey Brewing in Glenwood. Native is still around, I think. Blue Moon closed their tap room but is also still around.

Breweries here are closing weekly or being bought out and gutted (Great Divide, Upslope, Station 26, Funkwerks).

Coors was right, craft beer was/is a fad. Yeah sure, a few places will survive but most won't.

Beer is dead, long live beer.

I remember being in Fort Worth about 1979 and having my first Coors beer which was ice cold at some cowboy bar and I thought it was glorious. We still couldn’t buy it east of the Mississippi River so we brought home a few cases in the trunk and you would have thought we were Smokey and the Bandit with our friends. Had a party at a friend’s camp at False River and to this day old friends talk about that beer.

Long time ago but fun to remember.

Disagree. Yes the craft beer market is no longer growing at a 33% rate like it was in the 2010s. It is, however, seeing growth equal to every other business model.

quote:

In 2025, the craft beer market is experiencing mixed growth, with a global market size projected to be between $110.94 billion and $128.94 billion. While overall U.S. craft beer production and brewery counts are declining, the market is showing growth in dollar sales and for smaller, on-site breweries, driven partly by strong consumer demand for premium and non-alcoholic options

Craft beer isn’t dying, it’s just a normal business now. The craft beer boom is dead, and with that goes shitty beer, poor business acumen, and poor standards.

quote:

U.S. market share: Despite the volume decline, craft beer's share of the overall U.S. beer market has remained steady at 13.3% because the total U.S. beer market also shrank. U.S. dollar sales: Retail dollar sales of craft beer increased by 3% in 2024 due to price increases and a stronger performance from onsite sales versus distribution, leading to a 24.7% share of the total beer market's retail dollars.

Several years ago I got really drunk off Rogue Dead Guy beers in a bar/pizza place in Oxford, MS. Good times.

Don't think I've had one since

I remember moving to Texas around 2013 and being able to find these on the regular. It was so awesome.

Magic Hat's IPA might be one of the worst beers I've ever tried.

Ruination was good, but Stone Levitation was my favorite. Sometime between 5-10 years ago, stone decided every IPA needed to be 9% ABV. I quit drinking their stuff around then. Levitation was around 4.4%. I think they discontinued it about 10 years ago.

I know the answers will vary depending on the person but to me peak craft beer where it was at its best was around 2009-2015.

That's disappointing to hear, I was a huge Great Divide fan. Those Yeti stouts were great.

For several years I was married to a gal from Dallas and every time we went to visit her family, my friends in the N.O. area would put in orders for cases of beer. Good thing I had a pickup truck at the time, and I would often return to N.O. with 15-20 cases of Coors stacked in the bed.

My brother-in-law would do the same with Yuengling when he'd head up north for work. Now it's available in every big supermarket in the N.O. area and one of my favorites.

Dead Guy Ale - one of the few beers I've just never cared for.
