VATICAN CITY (AP) — The Vatican on Tuesday doubled down on the value of monogamous marriage between a man and woman, responding to concerns raised by African bishops about the practice of polygamy in their flocks.
The document from the Vatican’s doctrine office said the Catholic Church had a well-documented position upholding the indissolubility of marriage as a lifelong union between spouses. But it said the church’s position on the unique and exclusive nature of a monogamous marriage was less well known.
In recent years at Vatican meetings of bishops, African delegates have regularly complained that polygamy is widely practiced among their flocks and asked the Vatican for guidance.
“A Dear One: In Praise of Monogamy” provides them with a doctrinal document tracing the way marriage has been treated in the Bible, poetry, Christian theology and philosophy and by various popes and church councils across history.

So the Vatican has reduced itself to making suggestions.

I believe they offered the African bishops guidance. It wasn’t a suggestion.

I believe guidance is about as close to a suggestion as you can get
How about saying.. Gee guys the CC has defined marriage the same way for two thousand years.
You are a bishop of the CC , How do you not know that marriage is defined as union between one man and one woman.
Everything else is adultery

I think it was a more layered question than that. And the actual document, sadly, hasn't been translated into English yet.

Would you like for them to raise an army and begin a holy war?

Fine and good for religious platform.
But it should have zero influence on public policy.

You are missing a mark.
The title of the "One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church" belongs to the Catholic Church.

Monogamy is definitely better for men.
In a polygamous system the top 5% of men would lock down all the OT 8s, 9s, and 10s leaving the rest of the men with slim pickens.

There are far more women in the world and the happiest men and women I know practice polygamy. It just makes sense.

It says a lot that they even have to re-emphasize their position on these matters. Perhaps if there wasn't so much 'acceptance' these days, and gay couples actually being blessed in the church this stuff wouldn't have to be 'emphasized.'

Nicene Creed FTW
You are aware that the Holy Apostolic Catholic Church (i.e., the Orthodox Patriarchates who excommunicated Rome a thousand years ago) adhere to the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed (which is the Creed you're talking about that mentions the word, "Catholic")? You are aware that the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed says, and I quote,
quote:And you are aware that there's no "Roman" in the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed, right?
And we believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church.
You do know what the word, "Catholic," means, right?
You are aware the Nicene-Constantinopolitan creed was written in AD 325 -- almost 800 years before the patriarchate in Rome was excommunicated from the majority Patriarchates during the great schism?
It's the only creed the Apostolic Orthodox Catholic church holds with binding authority. Roman Catholicism was 8 centuries away from becoming a, "thing," when the Orthodox Patriarchates (including Rome) wrote it.
The Roman Catholic church has GOT to do a better job educating its catechist on church history. They're almost as bad as protestants. Almost.
